Todd Dean: Where is the Selfie Scammer Now?

Having been accused of romantically deceiving several women across the country in order to take financial advantage of them, Todd Dean has become quite a sensation over the past few years. In fact, his case was even featured in Netflix’s ‘Love Con Revenge: The Selfie Scammer,’ which incorporated not only archival footage but also exclusive interviews from those allegedly defrauded by him. However, the Nashville, Tennessee, resident did not feature or make any statements in the original, keeping his background, alleged offenses, and other details a mystery.

Todd Dean Appeared to Always Have an Interest in the Business World

It was in late July 1968 in Billings, Montana, when Todd Dean was born to Melanie Dean and Robert Dean as one of their two children, where he grew up surrounded by affection, care, and support. Being raised in a nurturing household, he knew he could take a leap of faith and follow whatever ambition, dream, or goal he had because he would have the backing of his loved ones. Therefore, as soon as he graduated from Billings West High School in 1986, he enrolled at Montana State University Billings in his hometown to pursue a Bachelor’s in Business Administration.

According to records, Todd earned his degree without any issues in 1992 and then kick-started his career by landing a Life Insurance Sales and Management position at American Income Life. He proudly served here for nine years, only to later shift gears and evolve into a full-fledged entrepreneur. He actually established an angel investor network called Keiretsu Forum  Northwest in 2005. The Montana turned Washington resident proudly held the title of this company’s Founder/CEO until its doors closed for good in September 2011, by which point he had also dabbled in other avenues.

In fact, Todd volunteered at SCORES Seattle from 2009 to 2011 to help develop local small businesses, all the while serving as the CEO of the guitar system brand Brace Audio for six months. Then, he took a course at the University of Washington while working as a Sales Adjunct Professor before spreading his wings to teach Entrepreneurial Management too. He was employed here until December 2013, but by this point, he was also already the proud Chief Executive Officer at Todd Deans & Co., a company he reportedly built from the ground up as a consultancy.

Todd Dean Admitted to Living Off the Personal Loans He Took From Dates For Years

While it’s unclear precisely when Todd Dean started asking the women he was dating to finance his lifestyle, we know it dates back to at least the mid-2010s. In fact, as per Karen Alpert in the show, when he swindled her out of $24,920, he was still based in Seattle and hadn’t yet started working on his mental health program, Sanjara Wellness. According to records, Todd established this organization to help individuals deal with anxiety, addictions, depression, stress, suicidal ideations, trauma, and other mental health issues in October 2017. As per Todd’s alleged targets, he had a pattern of behavior to draw them in and keep them hooked, which involved a lot of charm and charisma from his side.

Karen Alpert and Todd Dean

Karen claimed he always came off as incredibly successful, so when he eventually started talking about exciting investment opportunities and asked if she would like to join in, she felt compelled to say yes. According to her, Todd asked her to invest in different businesses frequently, but she got suspicious when he claimed they were start-ups, but were requesting $100,000. That’s when this New York-Idaho resident realized the truth, stopped transferring him money, and ultimately sued him for what he owed her, which a judge granted in 2018. However, for most of Todd’s other ex-girlfriends after this point, like Jill Schardein, the case was different because he allegedly always claimed he needed money for his business.

Todd had relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, resided in a rather luxurious condominium, and owned the Sanjara Wellness estate on the outskirts of the city. Yet, he was taking advantage of his unsuspecting girlfriends to finance his lifestyle. Per reports, he love-bombed women until they got really serious with him, following which he would ask them if they could loan him money, ranging from $25 to $1,000. Initially, per Jill and some of his other exes, he paid back within 48 hours with an additional sum to show his gratitude, but this soon stopped. In the end, they claimed he would call their relationship quits the moment they either started asking him questions about why he needed money when he was already apparently successful or just stopped financing him. He was eventually sued over his frauds and admitted in court that he indeed lived off the personal loans his then-partners gave him for several years, with it often being $10,000 per month.

Todd Dean Continues to Work as a Mental Health Professional Today

Although several women from across the country came forward to sue Todd for scamming them in the early 2020s, he was never criminally arrested or charged for any wrongdoing. However, he did start being publicly referred to as the Selfie Scammer, considering he often sent his girlfriends/targets front-camera images or mini-vlogs instead of simply texting or calling. This was allegedly another way for him to love bomb them because it indicated he was utterly invested in her, her daily experiences, and their growing relationship. In the end, upon being sued by multiple women, Todd was held liable by the courts to pay them back almost every dollar they were owed, but he never did; instead, he filed for bankruptcy in December 2023.

Todd claimed he had no funds to support his lifestyle or businesses, let alone pay his roughly 27 creditors, so he filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which was approved in August 2024. He later had to sell the property on which he planned to open Sanjara Wellness, but courts declared that funds from this couldn’t be used for repayment because it was under his business LLC and not a personal asset. Therefore, today, at the age of 56, Todd continues to reside in Nashville, Tennessee, where he still serves as the Founder-CEO of his business consultancy company, Todd Dean & Co.

Moreover, it appears as if Todd remains hopeful about making it as a mental health advocate because he is now reportedly working with youngsters who struggle with anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more. In fact, it seems like he remains in the public light as an expert in wealth creation and entrepreneurial investment as well as a mental health advocate, even featuring in a few podcasts for the same. However, on a more personal level, he has since preferred to keep his experiences a lot more private, so all we know is that he remains a travel and music enthusiast for whom spending quality time with his family is most important. He is especially close to his son, Sean Dean. We should mention that he lost his mentor, John Meisenbach, in 2024 and even traveled to Seattle to commemorate him.
