Season 4 of ‘Transplant’ has so far found the doctors at York Memorial fighting their private battles on a daily basis as they continue to save lives on the job. Mags, who is officially on the waitlist for a heart transplant surgery, struggles with reconciling a future surgery in the cards for her, especially in light of her pursuit of the ER fellowship spot. Meanwhile, Theo finally finds himself returning to the hospital, albeit only for a review panel that will decide the course of his future. Inversely, Bash finds himself looking back to his past, specifically his troubled relationship with the man who helped him immigrate to Canada six years ago. As all of this unfolds, a father-son duo, a man with superhero ideation, and another patient with a slightly embarrassing accidental injury flood the hospital halls. SPOILERS AHEAD!
Theo Makes a Comeback to York Memorial
So far in the season, Theo has been removed from the central action unfolding in the hospital. A previous lapse in judgment had resulted in a momentary suspension from the hospital while his case is under observation. Earlier, one of his patients had showcased evident proof of sexual abuse, which she patently refused to report to the authorities. Theo makes an assumption about her reluctance and its ties to outside fear and decides to report the incident himself despite the lack of clear consent from his patient. Although he initially tries to justify his actions, he begins to realize the error of his ways during his period of suspension.
Theo evokes the same sentiment during his review panel, asserting that he has improved for the better and is actively working on himself. In response, department chief Neeta brings up his previously condescending behavior in attempting to have one of his virtual patients jump the line at the hospital during an emergency. Even though his sense of emergency was called for, his remarks to the on-duty nurse had been unnecessarily rude and entitled, showcasing yet another requirement for improvement. As it stands, despite his claim to change, Neeta is uncertain about Theo returning to work under her command. Still, by the end of the review, it seems she decides to give the doctor a second chance, as she welcomes him back to duty.
Bash and Mags Save a Father From a Near-Fatal Fungal Infection
Bash’s recent run-in with an emergency treatment during a sinkhole and Mags’ recent decision to go on the waiting list for a heart transplant continue to loom over their minds. Nevertheless, as seasoned professional, they don’t let their personal complications get in the way of their work. In this episode, the duo mainly tackles a family that comes into the emergency room when one of the fathers, Craig, begins experiencing a piercing pain in his hip. The son, Eli, also enters the establishment sporting a prominent bruise on his face that he denies as a result of a punch to the face.
After some pointed yet light conversation, Mags is able to discover that the bruising is actually a reaction to the fungal spores Eli has been working with for his science project. As it turns out, Craig used to have lupus, which means he has a weakened immune system, which he seemed to have passed down to Eli, who is his biological son. Consequently, the harmless bruise and the piercing hip pain are results of the same fungal infection that the family seems to have contracted. Craig’s history of lupus makes the infection significantly worse for him. Nonetheless, his family and the doctors manage to come up with a viable solution. Since Eli is a perfect blood match for him, he can share his lupus-free blood with his father to help him get rid of the infection. In the end, this helps the family get closer as it tears down previous walls of secrecy and allows the teenager to have his own agency. Thus, Mags and Bash are able to save the father’s life.
Bash Reminisces His Past in More Ways Than One
After Bash’s near-death experience with the sinkhole, the doctor finds himself revisiting an old part of his life. During his immigration process from Syria to Canada, he found invaluable help from a Canadian doctor, Elliot, whom he met at a refugee camp. Along with helping him with the paperwork and raising funds for an efficient immigration, Elliot also opened up his home for Bash and his sister, Amira. The duo resided in the former’s rental apartment, where they received the Canadian doctor and his family’s hospitality and endless kindness. In a way, Bash and Amira became a part of Elliot’s family.
Even so, when the time came, the former decided to move out of the latter’s house without any explanation or warning. Worse yet, in the years that followed, he refrained from maintaining any communication or connection with the other family. For the same reason, Elliot is wary of Bash and his intentions when he seeks him out in the aftermath of the sinkhole. For now, the details of what compelled the latter to cut ties to such an extreme length remain unknown. Yet, it seems running built bridges once they become significant is a learned habit for the doctor. Bash realizes he might have done the same with Mags, in their abrupt separation as the pair share a sentimental moment together. In the aftermath, the broken-up couple inevitably fall back into bed with each other. This is bound to have notable consequences in the future, especially with Mags’ secretive surgery in her future.
