Bash Loses Out on the Fellowship Position
Days after their ill-advised hookup, Bash and Mags continue to dance around their brief romantic rekindling, putting any lingering feelings on the back burner for now. Even though the former seems, at times, eager to discuss the past development in their relationship, their hectic jobs and the stress of the near proximity of Devi’s decision keep them plenty preoccupied. Additionally, both doctors have their respective patients of the day to look after. Bash oversees the treatment of Yuri, an immigrant single father who is facing a few issues likely caused by the lead in his building’s water. As such, he attempts to convince the patient to register for services that will allow him to get better, which is more expensive on the public health’s dime. Alternatively, Mags looks after Donald, an elderly man with a broken wrist.
Even though Donald is forgetful about his medicines on his own, something feels off about the oversight in his previous X-ray scans that were supposed to be ordered by Claire. Eventually, Devi calls Mags in for a midday meeting and reveals that she has been chosen for the fellowship fair and square. Although she tries to keep the news under wraps until she can share it herself, it still reaches Bash thanks to Olsen. Still, despite his disappointment, before the day ends, the doctor manages to convince Yuri to give the treatment a try. However, since the single father isn’t willing to leave his son with another family member or the social worker, he blows past protocol and agrees to babysit Alexei himself. Likewise, Mags also uncovers the real issue plaguing Claire, i.e., the after-effects of her previous stabbing incident, and offers the nurse her unbridled help and support.
June’s Resident Messes up in the Trauma Department
Given York Memorial’s status as a teaching hospital, residents have always been a part of the establishment’s environment. Novak, on his part, has always been fairly critical of this aspect and rarely feels the need to hold his tongue around young residents. Naturally, when Ryan, an easily spooked resident, joins the team, it creates plenty of tension within the department. While operating on a patient, the young doctor fails to accurately note a crucial development, which nearly costs the man his life. As a result, he blows up at Ryan without any remorse. However, the tense confrontation sends the latter into a panic attack, wherein he nearly throws up into the patient’s gaping wound.
Yet, in the aftermath, instead of owning up to his mistake, Ryan accuses Novak and June of creating an unsafe working environment. The senior doctor, for his part, stands firm in his decision against issuing any apology to smooth out the situation. He insists that a thin skin and a capacity for slip-ups simply don’t belong in the high-stakes department of ER trauma. Therefore, the responsibility of solving things firmly lands on June’s shoulders. She’s already dealing with a handful in her personal life, as she finally starts making progress in her journey to overcome her self-harming tendencies. Nevertheless, she shrugs off her issues and attempts to extend an olive branch toward Ryan. Yet, he remains entitled, insisting that the department consider his sensitivities. Inevitably, this leads June to snap at the resident herself. Although there’s little else she could’ve done in this situation, one has to wonder if it will come back to haunt the department in the future.
Mags Has a Big decision to Make
The hectic day in the hospital comes to an end in time. Complications arise with Bash’s patient, setting him up for trouble in his decision to go over Devi’s head to babysit Alexie. Still, despite the challenges that the day brings, he tries ot remain optimistic about his future even if it might have to exist beyond the halls of York Memorial. On the other hand, Theo has a significantly more productive day, especially after he manages to save the life of Ash, his girlfriend’s kid. In fact, he even manages to score an invitation to the family dinner after making a great first impression on the young teenager despite the unpleasant circumstances.
Ultimately, June decides to host a small get-together with the duo to celebrate her roommate’s selection for the fellowship program. However, a big surprise awaits the latter. Earlier in the day, Mags drops her phone in her food, which leads the device to be dead for the entire day. Yet, in the evening, she receives a frantic call from her transplant team, who inform her that a heart is ready and waiting for her at the exact moment. Since Mags hasn’t told her colleagues or her boss about her severe heart condition, the transplant opportunity is bound to create several complications for her going forward.
