Transplant Season 4 Episode 7 Recap: Torn

In ‘Transplant‘ season 4, significant changes loom on the horizon for the healthcare professionals at York Memorial Hospital. Mags continues to thrive in the aftermath of her heart transplant procedure, while Theo keeps working to earn Devi’s trust in his professional work. On the other hand, June still struggles to find her footing as the sole head of the Trauma OR in light of Novack’s exit from the department. Similarly, Bash, whose residency will end in a matter of months, also remains lost about his future in the medical field. Nonetheless, as an unusual Earthquake takes over the city, bringing an influx of patients to the hospital, each character must put their own hang-ups in the backseat to prioritize one near-disaster or another. SPOILERS AHEAD!

Bash Makes a Decision About His Future

Things have been looking up in Bash’s love life ever since he and Mags got together after the latter’s life-changing surgery. Unlike their last attempt at a relationship, this time around, both are eager to give each other and their bond a real chance. Inversely, while Mags’ career remains on a promising path, Bash is facing much uncertainty in his own professional life. His residency at York Memorial is due to be up in a matter of weeks. Since the establishment was the first place to give the Syrian doctor a real chance in Toronto, he’s understandably worried about the promise of his departure from the place. Still, it isn’t as if there’s a shortage of opportunities in the doctor’s future.

The same is proven when Bash gives an interview at St. Agnes, a smaller yet reputable hospital in the city. The doctor’s credentials and experience make him a coveted hire for the establishment. As such, they offer him the ideal next job that he’s been looking for with a 4-year contract. Nonetheless, Bash ends up turning the offer down in a moment of instinctual reaction. Although the doctor regrets the decision later and tells Mags as much, he knows that something about the opportunity feels off. Yet, he can’t help but wonder if this instance is another in a long line of fight-or-flight instincts that he has been making his whole life. The same one that drove him to break away from Mags the first time around or move out of Elliot’s house without a warning. Even so, in light of the instrumental decision, his partner encourages him to trust and embrace his instincts for better or worse.

The Nurse Shortage Issue Leads to Lethal Roads

Dr. Devi has long been concerned about the short-staffing issue at York Memorial, particularly among the nurses. In fact, it’s the same reason that she cut down the ER fellowship program to one candidate in the first place. Even so, the problem continues to plague the halls of the hospital. The earthquake exacerbates this problem as the medical professional sees an unpredictable increase in patient numbers. Still, it’s beyond tragic when one of their patients, an older man diagnosed with cancer, passes away while waiting in the hallway. As soon as Rhonda learns about the patient, she tries to resuscitate him, but ultimately fails due to his DNR wishes.

The incident becomes too much for Rhonda, and she decides to quit her position at the hospital. Although she has made similar light-hearted threats in the past, it seems she’s prepared to go through with it this time around. Fortunately, Mags finds a different truth when she reaches out to her once the chaos at the hospital is managed. Part of what drove Rhonda to truly consider quitting is Claire and her mourning issues. The other nurse, who recently struggled with a notable trauma, has been struggling with pill addiction for months. Therefore, her co-workers have noticed a significant shift in her behavior. In the end, Claire’s closest colleagues and Dr. Devi attempt to hold an intervention for the nurse, which isn’t received very pleasantly.

Bash and Theo Work Together to Save a Life

The earthquake brings plenty of patients to York Memorial. However, it also leads to some complications in another hospital that isn’t as well-staffed to deal with the life-threatening injuries. One particular instance of a chemical spill puts a young kid’s life at risk. To make things even more complicated, the young patient is a rare case of inverted or mirror internal organs, making the prospect of surgery even more daunting. Therefore, Bash, who has some experience in this unique situation, steps in to provide assistance to the doctor on the scene over the phone. While the latter prepares for the operation, Bash also treats another patient, Shaun, who has been stabbed in the eye, following a garage incident.

Likewise, Theo, who ends up helping Bash in the over-the-call operation, also deals with a teenage patient who seems to be struggling with an eating disorder. In the end, the two doctors are able to help out their own patient, despite the bumps in the road, before coming together to assist the other doctor over the phone. Thanks to some creative thinking and problem-solving, they’re able to guide the other doctor and save the young kid’s life. This instance remains another example of Bash’s ability to dive into complex scenarios and emerge on the other side. Therefore, one can’t help but wonder if the doctor will eventually find his calling along the same lines, once he parts ways with York Memorial.
