Directed by Emily Turner, Netflix’s ‘Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers’ is a true crime documentary film that chronicles the crimes of Aileen Wuornos, a female serial killer known for killing multiple men while working as a sex worker in the state of Florida between 1989 and 1990. Among her victims was Troy Burress, a family man whose death shocked the community further and devastated his loved ones. The documentary also focuses on the killer’s background and the crimes that led to her arrest.
Troy Burress’ Remains Were Found a Few Days After His Sudden Disappearance
Troy Eugene “Buddy” Burress was born on January 28, 1940, in Savannah, Tennessee, to John Solomon Burress and Clara Imogene Woodall Hoskins. Growing up, Troy was accompanied by his siblings — Everet Ray Burress and Letha Prater — with whom he seemingly shared a close-knit bond. At some point, he crossed paths with Rose Sharon and fell head over heels in love with her. They began dating and eventually made their relationship official in the eyes of the law. The couple resided in Ocala, Florida, where he landed a job at Gilchrist Sausage.

When the 50-year-old sausage salesman didn’t return home on July 31, 1990, he was reported missing to the police. In the days that followed, his wife, Rose, and other loved ones searched for him alongside the authorities. However, a few days later, on August 4, their worst nightmare came true as the married man’s remains were discovered in a wooded area along State Road 19 in Marion County, Florida. Although his remains were quite decomposed by that time, the medical examiner still managed to conclude that the cause of his death was two gunshot wounds to his torso. Immediately, a homicide investigation was launched by the authorities to get to the bottom of the gruesome murder.

During the investigation, the authorities connected Troy Burress’ murder with other killings of men, including Richard Mallory and Charles “Dick” Humphreys, that had taken place in the state of Florida between 1989 and 1990. In the following months, the detectives linked a woman named Aileen Wuornos to at least seven murders, including that of Troy. On January 9, 1991, the police took her into custody at The Last Resort bar located in Volusia County, Florida. A few days later, on January 16, she admitted to killing the men in order to save her girlfriend at the time, Tyria Moore, from prosecution.

However, the serial killer alleged that she committed the murders because they had tried to rape her, claiming she acted in self-defense. On January 27, 1992, she was convicted of killing Richard Mallory and was sentenced to death a few days later. A couple of months later, on March 31, she pleaded no contest to the murders of her other victims, including Troy Burress, Charles Humphreys, and David Andrew Spears. For these crimes, she was handed three more death sentences on May 15, 1992. More than a decade later, she was executed by lethal injection on the morning of October 9, 2002.
