Turn of the Tide Season 4: Why was It Cancelled?

Netflix’s ‘Turn of the Tide’ (‘Rabo de Peixes’ in Portuguese) follows the story of four friends who become embroiled in an escalating turn of events, leading them into a life of crime. It begins with a load of cocaine crashing on the shores of their small island. They think that their lives will be transformed by the drugs, but by the third season, it becomes clear that their destiny, and that of their town’s, is in their hands. The third season ends on a definitive note for the characters, leaving little to no room for further exploration of the story. This is because it is also the final season of the series, and there won’t be a ‘Turn of the Tide’ Season 4.

Turn of the Tide Season 3 Was Intended as the Natural End of the Story

When ‘Turn of the Tide’ was renewed for a third season, the show’s creators decided that this should also be the final season of the show. The end of the story had been fixed while making the second season itself, which was shot back-to-back with the third. The writers knew where the story of Eduardo and his friends was headed, and they wanted to bring it to its natural end. This worked out for the better, as a cancellation would have meant that the fans never got to find out what truly happens to the characters in the end. With that in mind, the third season does its job of wrapping up all the storylines, providing answers to all the major questions, and leaving no cliffhangers for the characters.

Considering this, if the show were to continue with a fourth season, then a completely new story would be needed. After the ending that Eduardo and his friends received in the Season 3 finale, it would be unfair to draw them back into the world of crime and drugs when they’ve finally made peace with their circumstances and decided not to get involved in all that chaos again. A new season could explore their work as Night Vigilantes, though that has already put them at odds with the local police, who prefer to solve crimes themselves. All this means that either they would have receded into a quieter life, or they would have to be desperate enough to get back into the game that almost ruined their lives and killed them.

Turn of the Tide Season 4 Could Explore a New Cast of Characters

Since ‘Turn of the Tide’ is so focused on the core four characters, the fourth season would have had to bring them back in some capacity. This would mark the return of José Condessa as Eduardo Melo, Helena Caldeira as Sílvia Arruda, André Leitão as Carlinhos, and Rodrigo Tomás as Rafael Medeiros. Their regular collaborator, Ian, would also be expected to join them in their latest adventures, which would bring back Afonso Pimentel. Because Eduardo’s romance with Bruna becomes an important part of his storyline, Kelly Bailey would be expected to reprise her role.

One of the most impactful characters of the show was Maria João Bastos’s Inspector Paula Frias. However, her story takes a tragic turn in the third season. Most of her time is occupied by the search for her daughter, Mariana. By the time that search ends, Paula’s story has taken a turn for the worse. Her death in the penultimate episode wraps things up, ending any possibility of return in the future. While the good guys take a hit, the bad guys don’t come out unscathed either. Still, Victória Guerra’s Cristina Brum and Joaquim de Almeida’s João Canto Moniz are still alive by the end of Season 3.

Given how the Night Vigilantes ruin their carefully laid out plans in the Season 3 finale, it would make sense for the duo to plan a revenge of their own, which would not only bring back their characters but also serve as a turning point for the story of Eduardo and his friends. In addition to all the familiar faces, the fourth season would also have to add a new cast of characters, be it to portray new protagonists or more dangerous villains. New characters would also open the door for fresh storylines, making the show’s return truly justifiable. For now, however, the story has been wrapped up rather neatly, and it would be a shame to unravel it all over again.
