Does Sweet Tooth Die or Live in Twisted Metal?

Peacock’s ‘Twisted Metal‘ tells the story of a world separated by walls, with large chunks of the population being forced to live in the harshest conditions, while many citizens of elite cities lead a cushioned lifestyle. Such landscapes lead to the birth of rebellious icons who often turn fear into their strength. Sweet Tooth, a serial killer who wears a half-damaged clown mask, is one of the most infamous outsiders ever to live, and with no one to challenge him, his power grows by the day. However, when Calypso’s Twisted Metal race is announced, Sweet Tooth meets many people who share his desires and tendencies. Above all, the race provides him with a platform to exercise all his violent whims to his heart’s content, and no one seems to be spared from the onslaught that follows. Ultimately, his life of violence catches up with him, and Sweet Tooth is forced to pay the price. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Sweet Tooth Survives the Final Round and Heads Out to a New Life

Sweet Tooth comes into the story as an agent of chaos and refuses to step down from that role even for a moment. However, the murderous clown eventually finds his physical match in the form of Minion, one of Calypso’s creations who acts as the final challenge in the Twisted Metal race. Sweet Tooth’s best attacks barely leave a dent on Minion’s metallic body, but he himself is not so lucky. As the puppet rains punches on him, Sweet Tooth is unable to push back and eventually lies in a pool of his own blood, completely defeated. While it seems for a moment that his injury was fatal, the serial killer is confirmed to have survived the ordeal in the post-credit scene of the finale. Even better, his injuries appear to have not fazed him at all, and he compares his state to having a good sleep; another testament to his near superhuman strength and resilience.

While Sweet Tooth may be alive, he is not exactly free, and the final sequence features him in chains, being dragged by a taxi. Upon resisting, the clown learns that his rescuer is working under the orders of his own father, Pope Charlie Kane. In an instant, Sweeth Tooth’s demeanour mellows out, and he decides to walk along, eager to reunite with his dad. The place where he is headed is called the Eastern Sovereignity, and a signboard reveals that Charlie Kane is the ruler of that entire territory. This development expands the story’s scope once again, while simultaneously offering a glimpse into the enigmatic life of the mysterious serial killer. It is likely that more details of his past will follow from hereon out, with Charlie becoming a more prominent figure in the larger narrative, both as Sweet Tooth’s father and a regional pope.

Sweet Tooth Can Turn Out to be Either Friend or Foe

Sweet Tooth’s survival is portrayed in a fashion that mimics season one, with a post-credit scene heralding his arrival. However, the difference between the two scenes lies in the presence and absence of Stu. For a large chunk of the narrative, Stu serves as his best friend and partner, providing the companionship that a person as eccentric as Sweet Tooth has always yearned for. However, the power imbalances of their dynamic soon come out into the open, and Stu realizes that he must carve out his own path in the long run. As such, the season ends with the clown alone once again. However, this does not affect him much, as he appears to function on a different plane of logic altogether. Furthermore, with his father entering the equation, the power dynamics are bound to flare up again, and we might see the character’s vulnerable side at last.

Being infamous holds significant value for Sweet Tooth, as evident in his long-term rivalry with Mr. Grimm after he took over the Blackfield Prison as its most feared prisoner. As such, his defeat at the hands of Minion is likely to leave a severe impact on his psyche. The fact that he was defeated in front of an entire crowd is just the icing on the cake, and Sweet Tooth is bound to go on a revenge quest to hunt Minion down. This also means that his path will once again cross John, Quiet, and Stu’s, which can lead to a problem on two fronts. First, Sweet Tooth still holds Stu to the highest degree of affection, but now that the latter has finally started to live for himself, the clown might try to hold him back, by force if necessary. This sets up a potential conflict between the former partners down the line, adding to their already complicated dynamic.

The more pressing issue lies in John and Sweet Tooth’s differing intentions about Minion, who is revealed to be Dollface. The serial killer’s revenge strategy will not sit well with the protagonist, and a fight between them might be on the table, mimicking a true David and Goliath situation. However, given that Sweet Tooth has a soft spot for Dollface, he might listen to reason and stop going after her. In such a scenario, the serial killer can become the team’s greatest ally, as hardly anyone inside or outside the walls can stand up to him. With Charlie Kane also involved in the fray, the lone clown’s journey might be entangled in the larger geopolitical conflict. Ultimately, whichever party gets involved hardly changes his real goal: to spread terror.
