Two Graves: Do Verónica and Jamila Get Together? What Happens to Them?

Netflix’s ‘Two Graves,’ originally called ‘Dos tumbas,’ explores the idea of revenge as a double-edged sword, and how one can often lose themselves in the process of exacting it. The narrative follows the disappearance of two girls, Marta and Veronica, and how it affects their family. While the former belongs to a wealthy household led by a gang leader, the latter, a polar opposite, is headed by a matriarch, Isabel Luque. As the years pass and the chances of the case getting solved slim, Isabel realizes that the only way left is to dirty her own hands. Thus begins an investigation that rips off several Band-Aids and leaves fresh wounds in the process. With each new twist or turn, the story’s scope enlarges, and the protagonist realizes only too late that things are not quite as they seem. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Veronica and Jamila Lead a Happy Life Together

The final episode of the series reveals that Veronica is alive and has been in a relationship with Jamila for quite some time. Their present life is made possible after a journey through hell and back, and in the end, they settle down in the town where Jamila works as a scuba diving instructor. A pinboard in their home, full of joyous pictures, runs a highlight of all the time they have spent together, from beach vacations to cozy dinners. Seeing that her granddaughter is leading a happy life, Isabel finally begins to reflect on her actions and how they have led her astray from her real values. However, Rafael still stands in the couple’s way, and they must go on the run again. Initially, Veronica rejects the idea, pointing out how escaping once more will only reopen old wounds, but the possibility of ending the cycle once and for all empowers her to make the decision.

Veronica and Jamila’s bond likely has its roots in their shared suffering. While their paths initially diverged after Marta’s death, we learn that she fled out of fear and ultimately reconnected with Veronica, who was similarly on the run. Jamila’s characterisation in the show is defined by her willingness to do good, which is ultimately suppressed by powerful figures. As such, her decision to begin a relationship with Veronica marks a turning point for both of them. Their love story embodies a spirit of rebellion, rejecting their abusive background in favour of a new location, where Veronica and her partner can start from scratch. It is also made clear that the two have become completely self-sufficient over the course of two years, and no longer necessarily need a support system in the form of their parents.

The Couple Might Have to Take on New Challenges Along the Way

With Rafael still on their tail, Jamila and Veronica are forced to separate once again. While Isabel sends her granddaughter back on her way to Morocco, Jamila finds shelter at a hostel. However, this is only temporary, as Isabel’s sacrifice means that the two lovers are free to reconnect and live their lives as they please. Given that the protagonist’s fate is now deeply connected to them, Veronica is likely to come clean with her father and establish trust between them. However, her life with Jamila also means that Antonio’s dream of the entire family shifting to Brazil cannot be fulfilled. This, in turn, serves as a reality check, opening his eyes to how far his daughter has come from the day of the fateful accident. Veronica’s emboldened nature is made possible solely by her companionship with Jamila, and their bond can only grow stronger from here on out.

While it is possible that the duo returns to their native village, the police’s radar over Isabel and her family means that they will eventually be found, with Veronica potentially being arrested. Additionally, the media uproar around her and Jamila’s complicated past further sours the idea of the couple going back to their roots. In comparison, the idea of a blank slate in life has its own appeal, and given their competence, the pair is undoubtedly capable of carving out something special in their life. Veronica’s arc diverges from that of her grandmother in the concept of balance. She manages to retain both her own independence and her connection to her past, in its traumatic lows as well as its affectionate highs. As such, despite new adversities slowly creeping in, Jamila and Veronica’s love story ends on an optimistic note.
