Season 4 of Dark Winds Pays Tribute to the Legendary Actor
Udo Kier, who appeared as Irene’s grandfather Gunther Vaggan in the fourth season of ‘Dark Winds,’ passed away at the age of 81 on November 23, 2025. The news of his passing was shared by his family, who revealed that he died in a hospital in Palm Springs but did not specify the cause of death. Born in 1944, Kier grew up in post-war Germany. As a teenager, he worked in a factory, and it was while visiting a bar in Cologne that he crossed paths with future filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, with whom Kier would collaborate on several projects. After a few years, he moved to London, where he worked at a coffee shop while studying English. This is where he was discovered and offered the opportunity to work as an actor.

Over the course of his decades-long career, Kier appeared in about 275 films, spanning Hollywood and European cinema. Apart from Fassbinder, he also worked prolifically with the likes of Gus Van Sant and Lars Von Trier. After establishing himself in the European film industry, he got his first American role in ‘My Own Private Idaho.’ This opened a host of possibilities for him, and he demonstrated the range of his talents by working on movies of varied genres. He came to be known for his work from ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,’ to ‘Brawl in Cell Block 99’ and ‘Swan Song.’ While Kier played a wide range of characters, he had a particular affinity for playing villains. He explained his preference for dark roles with the fact that villains are more memorable than a normal person living an ordinary life.
Kier wanted to leave a mark on the audience, and he succeeded, no matter what role he donned. Age didn’t slow the veteran actor down, and he continued to appear in some of the most critically acclaimed movies and TV shows. His last film was the Academy Award-nominated political thriller, ‘The Secret Agent.’ He also worked on Hideo Kojima’s upcoming horror video game, ‘OD.’ His work in the fourth season of ‘Dark Winds’ was also one of his significant posthumous releases. In the AMC show, Kier played yet another Nazi, though this one was vastly different from the ones he had played before. The character’s fate in the penultimate episode of the season packs an emotional punch. Given that the episode marked his final appearance on the series, the creators paid a fitting tribute to Udo Kier, acknowledging his work not just in the show but also in the film and TV industry as a whole.
