Vivian and Patricia: Where Are Jean Charles de Menezes’ Cousins Now?

Netflix’s ‘Attack on London: Hunting the 7/7 Bombers’ is a four-part documentary series that chronicles the tragic 2005 bombings in separate parts of London, England. While the 7/7 bombings are the primary subject, the docuseries also focuses on the attempted or failed bombings that took place a couple of weeks later. Amidst all the commotion and panic, the authorities killed an innocent man named Jean Charles de Menezes, whose cousins, Vivian and Patricia, feature in the documentary. The two women recount their experiences and the effect the tragedy had on them.

Vivian and Patricia Fought Hard For Years to Get Justice For Jean Charles de Menezes

Daughter of Darcy, Vivian Meneses was raised in a loving and supportive household in Minas Gerais, Brazil, where she spent loads of time with her cousins, including Patricia and Jean Charles de Menezes. Before moving into his London flat in April 2005, she had traveled to Paris, Dublin, and Wales. Patricia, Jean, and Vivian were close and held a soft corner for each other. However, their bond was shattered on the fateful day of July 22, 2005, when Jean was shot to death by the police as he was suspected to be one of the failed bombers, Hussein Osman, who resided in the same building as the three cousins.

When Patricia and Vivian learned about the passing the following day, they were devastated and heartbroken. Patricia stayed in shock for several months. She told Mirror UK, “I wasn’t able to hear a police siren without shaking. I’d get scared whenever I see policemen on the street.” She admitted to thinking about Jean every day and crying every day for the first few years. Meanwhile, Vivian opened up: “I was just 22 and had been in the UK three months when Jean died. I was just a countryside girl and he was my safety, so when I lost him my ground went from under me. My whole world fell apart. I didn’t really have time to grieve because we had to deal with all the bureaucracy, the polemic, and the injustice. I don’t know how I survived.”

Despite the best efforts from the cousins, no legal action was taken against any officers involved in the killing of Jean. After the Crown Prosecution Service denied prosecuting police officers, the Menezes family challenged that decision at the European Court of Human Rights in July 2015. However, it turned out to be fruitless, too, as the European court’s judgment also decided not to prosecute any individual police officer.

Vivian Meneses Finds Strength in Her Family

Hailing from Brazil, as mentioned above, Vivian Meneses attended Escola Estadual São Sebastião. Since her move from her homeland to London, England, she has been living in the capital. Apart from being close to her father, Darcy, and mother, Vivian has also found a support system in her husband, Marcelo Oliveira. Together for more than a decade, the couple tied the knot on February 16, 2013, and made their relationship official in the eyes of the law. A few years later, Vivian and Marcelo entered parenthood as they welcomed their beloved daughter, Luna, into the world in 2019.

She wished that her late cousin, Jean Charles, were there to witness her marriage and watch her become a mother. She told Mirror UK in 2020, “Now I’m a mother myself I can understand about how my aunt felt when she got the news and how terrible it is to say goodbye to a son.” Elaborating on Jean’s potential, she added, “He had a big potential and I’m sure if he was here today he would be in a very good position. I remember when I went to America that was one of the things he wanted to do but didn’t have the chance. There are a lot of things I can say I did it and in a way I did it for him as well. He carries on living in us.” As per reports, she is a stay-at-home mother leading a fulfilling life with her husband, Marcelo, and her daughter, Luna, in Knightsbridge, West London.
