Paramount+’s ‘MobLand’ focuses on the war between the Harrigans and the Stevensons, the crime families operating in London, and trying to exert their monopoly in the business. While there had always been an air of animosity between them, things really took a turn when Eddie Harrigan killed Tommy Stevenson. Harry Da Souza, the fixer for the Harrigans, tries to defuse the situation by giving Tommy’s father, Richie, a patsy, but things are not that easy. The fifth episode focuses on the tension between two families, which comes to a head at Tommy’s funeral. However, the real turning point arrives at the end of the episode. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Vron Becomes the Victim of Maeve’s Wild Impulses
Almost all Harrigans are defined by their unique characteristics, meaning they all come with a different set of challenges. Maeve Harrigan is known for being impulsive. She always has something going on in her mind, not in a good sense. She sees trouble when it’s not there, and her paranoia seeps into her husband’s mind, leading him to make rash decisions that reflect poorly on his judgment and his family’s future. Still, Conrad is held behind by a few people, including Harry, so he considers his actions before moving forward with them. Maeve, however, doesn’t care for consequences, or she doesn’t seem to.
When Richie invites the Harrigans to his son’s funeral, they expect it to be an ambush. At the same time, they know that if they don’t go, it will be seen as a weakness. While Harry believes they should go, he also knows that one wrong move by any of them could worsen the situation, and there are two people — Maeve and Eddie—most likely to undo all that he has done to try and keep the peace between the families. And his suspicions are proven correct when the grandmother and the grandson do erratic things. Maeve is told to rein in her behaviour and show some respect, but when she approaches Vron to do the same, even if with a tone that suggests otherwise, Vron lashes back at her.
Because everyone knows Eddie is the one to kill Tommy, Vron didn’t want the Harrigans at the funeral. But she had to relent because this is what Richie wanted. However, this did not mean that she had to be civil with them. So, when Maeve approaches her to say how sorry she is for Tommy’s death, Vron calls her out for not being sincere in her feelings. She goes one step further to disrespect her in front of all her friends. Maeve does not take it well, but before she can do anything, Kevin spikes her drink, and she falls asleep. She does not wake up until the whole thing is over, everyone is back home, and Conrad already has a peace treaty on the table from Richie.
Maeve Claps Back at Vron’s Disrespect
Maeve may have been subdued due to the spiked drink, but this does not make her less angry. When she wakes up, she is in a rage, first about her drink being spiked and next about Vron’s harsh words for her. Things have gone so far that she knows her husband will do nothing to get revenge for her. In fact, due to her sleep, she is unaware of the deal that Conrad may have agreed to with Richie. This communication problem causes further problems as Maeve will not rest until Vron has been taught a lesson. She immediately calls up Paul. We don’t hear what she tells him to do, but moments later, her directions become pretty clear.
The day after the funeral, when Vron is ready to go to the shops to get some stuff, her car is tampered with. When she starts the car, it goes up in flames with a shocking explosion. This is entirely unexpected for everyone, including Richie, who thought he had proposed peace, which would have worked in Conrad’s favor. But no one expected Maeve to lash out as she did, perhaps because no one knows she is the real reason Tommy is dead. With blood on her mind, she retaliates for her disrespect with death. One could believe she does this without caring about the war she will start, but that is precisely what she wants. She is done with her husband keeping the Harrigans on the sidelines because he is obsessed with maintaining peace. She wants to stir things up, and Maeve’s death is a crucial step in that direction.
