Do Mirren and Ebon End Up Together in We Were Liars?

In Prime Video’s ‘We Were Liars,‘ a spotlight is shone on the intricacies, awkwardness, and beauty of adolescent love amidst a mystery narrative brimming with secrets and deception. While the main relationship at the heart of the story is the bond between Gat and Cadence, the show also delves into another blossoming romance, one involving Mirren and Ebon. Although the two get off on a bad footing, they gradually warm up to one another as the narrative progresses, leading to more serious and meaningful development for both characters. As such, they become increasingly dependent on one another for their emotional needs, especially as Mirren deals with the toxicity of her family life. However, by the end, everything changes as the future of the couple is left hanging in the air, with the truth behind Summer 16 threatening to unravel everything. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Mirren and Ebon’s Relationship Falls Apart in the Wake of a Tragedy

At the start, Ebon and Mirren seem to hate one another because of their condescending attitude towards each other. However, this changes later, with the duo seemingly transitioning from enemies to lovers over time. Eventually, it even looks like they are perfectly suited for one another. Unfortunately, this does not last, as by the end, we learn that the Liars (Johnny, Mirren, and Gat) died in the house fire on Beechwood Island. Believing that the the Clairmont mansion was to blame for all the in-fighting and jealousy within their family, the group razes it to the ground in an act of defiance that goes wrong. As a result, Johnny, Mirren, and Gat lose their lives, while Cadence is the only survivor. Therefore, Mirren and Ebon’s relationship has no way to thrive beyond this point as the young girl tragically passes away in the fire.

Despite her seeming death, Mirren’s ghost still hangs around the house, visiting Cadence when she returns in Summer 17 for the truth behind her missing memories. During this period, Cadence asks Mirren about her ongoing relationship with Ebon. The latter replies to this cryptically by stating that they are no longer together. At the time, Cadence believed that Mirren likely dumped him or vice versa. However, this turns out to be false as we later get the complete picture of what happened in Summer 16. In one of the final scenes of the season, we see Ebon walk past the Sound’s Edge gallery, where Mirren’s artwork has been put up as a way to pay homage to her legacy. Ebon smiles faintly as he looks in, even spotting Mirren’s ghost inside, offering a final parting between the couple as they acknowledge each other’s presence.

Ebon Shows Mirren Her Real Worth as a Person

While the bulk of the narrative plays out through the eyes of Cadence, ‘We Were Liars’ also tells us the inner thoughts, conflicts, and motivations driving its other characters. This includes the challenges faced by Mirren as one of the youngest and often overlooked members of the Sinclair family. She barely gets any attention from Cadence, who always thinks about her relationship issues with Gat. Meanwhile, her mother, Bess, is a self-involved individual who has severely narcissistic tendencies and delusions of grandeur. As a result, Mirren grows up in a toxic environment where she feels deeply unloved, unappreciated, and unwanted. These negative emotions ramp up her insecurities even though she presents a tough exterior on the outside.

When Mirren grows closer to Ebon, she believes that, just like the others in her life, he has no interest in getting to know her intimately. As such, she treats it like a casual fling that is mainly motivated by sex. However, she soon grows to realize that Ebon is genuinely interested in her life’s story and wants to encourage and support her to be the best version of herself. This is a marked change from how the others treat her, leading her to see him in a different light. Unlike the Sinclairs, Ebon comes from a more humble background, making him aware of the shortcomings of wealthy families like Mirren’s, who have all the money in the world but not the heart to go along with it. To that end, he shows Mirren what it feels like to be loved for the first time in her life. Unfortunately, this wholesome dynamic could be continued because of the tragedy that followed.
