The second season of Netflix’s ‘Wednesday‘ chronicles the protagonist’s journey of expanding her psychic powers. However, dabbling in the supernatural has consequences, and she soon finds one. A premonition shakes Wednesday to the core and puts all her priorities to the test. What makes things infinitely worse is that she has no shortage of enemies, and any one of them might bring her fears into life. As such, the Nevermore Academy student gears up for one more exciting year, complete with old flames turned foes, as well as a new mystery creeping within the institution. Although her abilities are remarkable, Wednesday soon realizes that she cannot win every battle alone. This brings her dynamic with her roommate and best friend, Enid, into the spotlight. Whether their friendship stands the test of time depends on both their individual and collective efforts. SPOILERS AHEAD.
Enid Survives the Premonition, Only to Find Herself in a New Predicament
One of the season’s two burning questions revolves around Wednesday’s ominous visions of Enid’s death. What makes this worse is that Enid, in her mind, declares that Wednesday is responsible for this gruesome fate. Desperate to stop them from becoming a reality, the protagonist goes on one risky journey after another, but the endpoint refuses to change. The possibility of Enid’s death takes on a new twist in episode 6, ‘Woe Thyself,’ when both Enid and Wednesday’s bodies end up swapping due to a botched foresight exercise. Although the duo has to go to hell and back to undo this accident, they are eventually successful, and with that, the premonition of Enid’s death also goes away. However, while that may be the case, the show’s history with narrative sleights of hand means that she might still not be safe.
Notably, the very reason Wednesday takes on this challenge is to regain her psychic powers and gain more insight into how to protect her best friend. Ironically, this brings more troubles to her fate, as it turns out that the ultimate punishment for this mix-up is death itself. With the clock ticking, Wednesday and Enid set out to play their respective parts, while looking for a way to undo the body swap. In the process, Enid learns of the predicament the protagonist has found herself in, and this prompts a heart-to-heart communication between the two friends. This exchange turns out to be the key to not only restoring their dynamic but also undoing the curse. There is also a deeper meaning to this development, as Enid’s cruel fate is also overturned, and with that, she is finally on level footing with Wednesday once again.
Although Enid appears to have survived imminent death, her life is still in danger, and this brings up her unique nature as a werewolf. Several signs and symptoms, most prominently her ability to transform without a full moon, suggest that Enid might be an alpha wolf. While that may sound appealing, being an alpha spells trouble, as Enid might never be able to return to her human form. Worse, alpha wolves are ritually killed by other werewolves as a way of asserting self-discipline. As such, when Enid goes out to save her best friend’s life, she risks turning into a werewolf for life. Though this doesn’t stop her from rescuing Wednesday, her worst fears come true with the transformation seemingly turning permanent. Enid decides to escape into the woods to protect her friends, leaving Nevermore and Wednesday behind.
Wednesday’s Visions Set Their Eyes on a New Target
The premonition of Enid’s death is gone but is now replaced by something deadlier, and Wednesday has to face the possibility of one of the Addams dying instead. Initially, she tries to weaponise this new omen to her advantage, voluntarily agreeing to sacrifice her sibling, Pugsley. However, her real feelings come out when he is kidnapped by Isaac to be used as a power source. The prophecy seems destined to be fulfilled, but the Addams family comes together in the last minute and rescues their youngest member, ultimately destroying Isaac’s machine. Thing provides the final blow, ending Isaac’s life and successfully overturning the vision once and for all. One of the core tenets of ‘Wednesday’ lies in the idea that the future can be moulded through one’s actions in the present, and the protagonist eventually finds the right course of action to protect her loved ones from certain doom.
While the omen does not come out to be exactly true, that does not mean things end well for Wednesday. In particular, the idea of Enid’s death is replaced by Enid’s disappearance. The protagonist eventually comes to learn that Enid is on the run and has not yet returned to her human form. With her trajectory headed to Canada, finding her can be incredibly difficult, but that does not stop Wednesday. With the help of her reliable uncle, Fester Addams, Wednesday sets out on a road trip to locate Enid and save her from the threat of fellow werewolves, amongst other things. In the same vein, the premonition may still not be done toying with their lives, and being the most important Addams in the narrative, a target on Wednesday’s back is inevitable. Nonetheless, the friends’ shared bond in the face of tragedy is likely to prevail.
