Netflix’s ‘Ginny and Georgia’ follows the story of the titular mother-daughter duo who get entangled in a complicated series of events after arriving in a Massachusetts town with the intention of starting over. The show goes back and forth in time to show us Georgia’s young days and the abuse she suffered back then, which has turned her into a hardened woman who is ready to do whatever it takes to protect her kids. However, over time, she is forced to confront the fact that she might be the one her kids need protecting from, and this tumult becomes the core of the show. In addition to the drama, the location itself becomes a character of its own, but interestingly, the place is not in the Bay State.
The Fictional Wellsbury is Brought to Life in a Completely Different Town
At the beginning of the show, Georgia and her children, Ginny and Austin, move to the town of Wellsbury. The reason Georgia chooses this place is because she has a past connection to it, and also because it has the potential to provide a better future for her children. In reality, there is no such place in Massachusetts. One could relate it to Wellesley or Westbury, both of which are in close proximity to Boston. Wellsbury is also described as close to Lexington and Boston, but in real life, the filming of the show took place in a Canadian setting. It is mainly filmed in the town of Cobourg in Ontario, Canada, with additional filming taking place in Toronto.
The show resorts to real locations to film the exterior scenes, but elaborate sets are preferred while filming the interior scenes, which allows the cast and crew to work more effectively. For example, the house that Georgia and her kids move into is a real private property located at 46 Baby Point Crescent in Parkdale-High Park district, York, Toronto. Another property in the neighborhood serves as the house of Marcus and Max Baker. Meanwhile, Coburg presents a plethora of places that set up the aesthetic of the fictional Wellsbury.
The Wellsburg High School, where most of the drama regarding Ginny’s romantic life occurs, is actually the defunct Nelson A. Boylen Collegiate Institute in Rustic, Toronto. The Wellsbury Town Hall is the Victoria Hall in Cobourg, and Joe’s Blue Farm Cafe is a real restaurant called El Camino, located at 74 King Street West, Cobourg. The show uses these beautiful real locations to create the idyllic town of Wellsbury, which is initially ideal for Georgia and her kids, but takes a much darker turn as Georgia’s past starts catching up to her and affects the peace she thought she’d finally created for her children.
