The Wheel of Time Season 3 Filming Locations

The shooting for the third installment of ‘The Wheel of Time’ was carried out primarily in the Czech Republic, especially in Prague. Following the pattern of previous seasons, a couple of more locations were utilized — Slovenia and Western Cape, South Africa. According to reports, principal photography for the season got underway in April 2023 and paused for a period of three to four weeks in August 2023. Several months after the shooting resumed, it was finally wrapped up in March 2024.

Prague, Czech Republic

A major portion of ‘The Wheel of Time’ season 3 was lensed in and around Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, located on the Vltava River. From what we can tell, the production team utilized sound stages of a couple of film studios in Prague, including Jordan Studios at Beranových 823 and Barrandov Studios at Kříženeckého náměstí 322/5 in the neighborhood of Hlubočepy. Spread across 350,000 square feet, the former was reportedly built specifically to incorporate production of the Prime Video show.

As for the Barrandov Studio, it consists of 11 soundproof sound stages, which accommodate any kind of lighting requirements. In addition, the film studio is also home to production offices, dressing rooms, catering areas, camera rooms, and make-up rooms, ensuring that all the necessities of the filmmakers are met. It has been reported that the filming unit also seemingly took over a sound stage in Prague’s district of Třeboradice in order to shoot scenes involving the White Tower, especially the Hall of the Tower.

Other Locations in the Czech Republic

The cast and crew members of ‘The Wheel of Time’ season 3 also traveled to other spots across the Czech Republic, including the area in and around the small village of Tetín. Since the exterior set of the Two Rivers is near the village, they reportedly made the most of the nearby fields and forests to tape pivotal sequences. From what we can tell, the municipalities of Vinařice, Dobříš, and Srbsko also served as key filming destinations for the third season, just like the previous installments. During the shooting process of the third season, the production team reportedly turned a few new sites into film sets, such as Vranov nad Dyjí, where the cast and crew were spotted recording a few scenes on an interior set. In addition, Toušice, Tocnik Castle, and Roztoky u Křivoklátu also supposedly feature in the backdrop of several portions of the season.

Slovenia

Besides the Czech Republic, Slovenia once again served as one of the many shooting sites for ‘The Wheel of Time’ season 3. The production team especially set up camp at the Soča Valley, which is home to the distinct emerald green colored eponymous River, and the surrounding areas to incorporate several important exterior and aerial shots, mainly involving the Two Rivers.

Western Cape, South Africa

The final leg of the production of the third installment of ‘The Wheel of Time’ took place in the Western Cape province of South Africa. From February 2024, the cast and crew members reportedly spent approximately six weeks in the province to lens multiple key portions. The filming unit set up camp at The Cape Town Film Studios at 7 Film City Boulevard in Cape Town, where they reportedly built a number of interior sets to portray the Aiel Waste, especially the Cold Rocks Hold and Rhuidean. Home to five sound stages, the film studio meets all the production requirements as it consists of production offices, workshops, backlot sets, water tanks, an exterior green wall, and many more amenities.

Moreover, a couple of culturally significant sites — the Afrikaans Language Museum at 11 Pastorie Avenue in Paarl, the Afrikaans Taalmonument on Gabbema Doordrift Street in Paarl, and Atlantis Dunes at 0 Dassenberg Drive in Cape Town — also served as prominent production locations for season 3 of the Prime Video show. Furthermore, the mountains of the Western Cape province are featured in the season. As per reports, the Northern Cape near the village of Vioolsdrif also hosted the production of the third round of the fantasy series.
