In episode 6 of ‘When Calls the Heart’s’ season 12, the earliest days of autumn arrive at Hope Valley, bringing new challenges and opportunities with summer’s departure. While this translates into an unfortunate cold for Elizabeth, it offers much more exciting adventures for others. Rosemary finds a whole new plan for her radio show, which might just solve the puzzle Allie and Oliver have recently undertaken to unravel. Meanwhile, Bill continues the investigation into the mysterious gold coin and runs into a familiar face from his past. As such, even though some leaves take to falling, new stones continue turning for the townsfolk. SPOILERS AHEAD!
Allie and Oliver Team Up to Solve a Mystery
As summer slips away, Allie’s heartbreak over her short-lived infatuation with Wyatt remains. Although it’s an awkward conversation, Nathan discusses the situation with her to make her realize the value of her own worth regardless of any boys’ appreciation of it. Still, the hurt persists, and she tries to distract herself by diving headfirst into her wolf project. However, it also bears much disappointment. As it turns out, the winter has brought bad news for the native animals of Hope Valley, especially those that rely on the pond’s biodiversity for food. Somehow, the pond has frozen over and gotten murky due to the recent algae bloom in the water.
For the same reason, the local salmon population has dwindled, leading to a food shortage for the bears. Eventually, Allie decides to return to the forest to investigate the situation further and finds an enthusiastic partner in Oliver, whom she runs into at the Queen of Hearts Saloon. The following adventure remains thrilling, with some ill-advised trespassing that ends up requiring cover from oncoming riders. Nonetheless, by the end of their mission, they successfully uncover the reason behind the decline in the salmon population. Lucas’ decision to share the National Park with ranchers has exposed the ecosystem to foreign herds. Thus, their interactions with the pond have directly caused an algae bloom.
Yet, this discovery isn’t the only one that unravels between the pair. Oliver’s initial reluctance to trespass naturally leads him to share his past with Allie to explain his dedication to always playing by the rules. The Cadet hasn’t been entirely honest about his past so far, particularly the mother he claims is waiting for him in the south. Instead, Oliver’s mother is a criminal behind bars whom he barely knows. Therefore, he’s aware that everyone expects him to turn out exactly like her, which pushes him to be mindful of his actions. Once Allie learns about the same, she realizes that she has more in common with the Mountie-in-training than she thought since both of them have parents with a seedy past. This opens up room for a certain connection between the duo, which is bound to grow in riveting ways.
Lucas Makes an Appearance on Rosemary’s Radio Show
As Rosemary’s joint investigation with Bill leaves the town for some official Mountie work, the journalist finds herself focusing back on her own project, the Valley Voice. Naturally, she finds some help from Fiona, who is in town momentarily in preparation for a big change in her life. She floats the idea of hosting a debate-like program on the radio show to engage the audience and continue Rosemary’s dedication to revolutionizing the news circuit. As such, they come up with the idea of the Daily Dialogue with a potential participant in mind.
With the turn in the season, Governor Lucas left Capitol City in favor of running his office out of Hope Valley for the foreseeable future. Therefore, Rosemary wants to host him on her show so that some of the common concerns regarding his policies can be discussed publicly. Predictably, Edward is against the idea, but it catches Lucas’ attention. Eventually, as Rosemary manages to convince the Governor of the idea, she comes up with the perfect opposition for him on the show. After Elizabeth takes ill—catching a mild cold that makes itself known through whacky dreams and loopy realities—Rosemary takes over her class as the substitute teacher.
Consequently, Rosemary ends up bringing the students of Hope Valley to the radio show, allowing each student some time with Lucas so that they can ask him questions about their concerns. Even though some are more frivolous than others—concerning comic book imports—many students have relevant queries. This includes Allie, who brings up her concerns about the National Park’s shared use with the Ranchers and its effects on the local fauna. Since her research is sound and thorough, Lucas agrees to take a look into the matter, which can prove to bring some changes to the future of the National Park.
Ava’s Past Becomes More Intriguing
Despite being a fairly new addition, Ava’s character has managed to capture attention easily since her arrival in Hope Valley. She’s presumably an heiress from Baltimore who came to the town after Elizabeth’s book inspired her to start a new chapter of her life. Nonetheless, her demeanor and backstory—which is startlingly similar to the resident teacher—are far too suspicious not to raise alarms. It seems Nathan and Lee have arrived at the same conclusion. As such, the Mountie calls the woman to the station with the news that they have somehow found one of her stolen trunks—in the same shade of green she had described.
Afterward, Lee brings it to Ava at the Saloon and urges her to open it up to check the belongings. The woman’s surprise and apprehension of the trunk remains suspicious. Yet, she manages to find a way out of the dilemma by claiming to have lost the key as well. In response, Lee urges her to shimmy the lock open. As such, the audience gets a clear view of the men’s clothes stashed in the trunks—a seemingly undeniable sign that the trunk isn’t Ava. Even so, she pretends the trunk is hers—which makes one wonder what other things she has lied about.
Bill Pays Sonny Garrison a Visit
While things unfold in Hope Valley, Bill’s investigation takes him out of town all the way to the Granville Prison. After the department learns about the coin’s connection to Tobby, they send over a forensics expert to aid in the previously small-scale investigation. Although Bill is unamused by the same, his opinion soon changes once he recognizes the assigned forensics expert: Georgie McGuill. From their interactions, it becomes obvious that the two know each other from a shared past together. Thus, they decide to advance to the next stage of the investigation together: an interrogation with Sonny Garrison.
Through some expert work together and a few tricks up their sleeves, the duo manages to convince Sonny to share information with them in exchange for possible favors. As a result, he tells them about the coin’s connection to Teddy Davis. Consequently, they find a new lead in the case. Furthermore, some of the past between Bill and Georgie also clears up in their riddle-filled conversation on the train back home. As it turns out, there used to be sparks of a potential romance between the two, with both of them harboring secret feelings for one another. Nonetheless, circumstances set them on different paths a long time ago. Even though they’re reluctant to dig up their past, it seems this partnership may rekindle past emotions.
