Where Was 1923 Season 2 Filmed?

Created by Taylor Sheridan, Paramount+’s ‘1923’ is a Western period drama series starring the legendary Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, respectively. Set around the same year as the title, the show revolves around the Dutton family and how they face different kinds of adversities. In the third season, fresh challenges loom over the couple and their ranch as the Dutton legacy is under the threat of extreme conditions.

In order to save his family, who are based in Montana, Spencer Dutton races back home before it gets too late. On the other hand, Alexandra embarks on an adventurous journey to reunite with Spencer and reignite the love they both used to share. Besides Ford and Mirren, the third season is also brought to life by the stellar performances from Brandon Sklenar, Julia Schlaepfer, Jerome Flynn, Darren Mann, Brian Geraghty, Jennifer Carpenter, Augustus Prew, and Janet Montgomery. The chilly and white winterscape of Montana serves as a contrasting canvas to shed light on the underlying themes of war.

1923 Season 2 Filming Locations

Unable to follow the footsteps of the inaugural season when it came to shooting sites due to tax incentive issues, the production of ‘1923’ season 2 was primarily moved to several locations across Texas, especially Austin, San Antonio, Lockhart, Bartlett, Galveston, and Alamo City. A minor portion was reportedly shot in Butte, Montana. Since the Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA strikes took up the majority of 2023, the filming for the sophomore installment was postponed. Finally, the principal photography got underway in July 2024 and continued for four months before getting wrapped up in November of the same year.

About the change in filming destination, J.P. Gallagher, chief executive of Butte-Silver Bow County, told Montana Standard, “The decision to film the Yellowstone series of ‘1923’ in Texas is disappointing. Nevertheless, we respect the production team’s decision and acknowledge that these choices are influenced by factors beyond our control. We were in talks with the production about ‘1923’ coming back to Butte because of the positive experience they had here, but state tax incentive programs were a major factor for the production to move to Texas.”

Austin, Texas

Many pivotal sequences for ‘1923’ season 2 were lensed in the capital city of Texas — Austin. The production team set up camp in the ATX Film Studios at 5330 Fleming Court in Austin to flawlessly incorporate numerous Montana-based features and locales without having to take the trip. Home to six sound stages of different sizes, the film studio also comprises 18,000 square feet of furnished office space, a wardrobe stage area with built-in racks, and ample parking space. All these facilities make the Austin-based studio a prominent choice for many filmmakers.

San Antonio, Texas

The filming unit of the second season of the Harrison Ford starrer also utilized the locales of San Antonio. Several streets and neighborhoods of the city feature in the backdrop of multiple scenes throughout the season. In particular, the downtown area of San Antonio was reportedly transformed into the 1920s New York City as the crew members incorporated characters with clothing and vehicles of that era on the streets. The cast and crew were spotted taping important scenes on East Pecan Street, East Houston Street, East Travis Street, Peacock Alley, Jefferson Street, and North Alamo Street.

Other Locations in Texas

For the purpose of shooting, the production team of ‘1923’ season 2 also traveled to various other locations across the state of Texas. For instance, the downtown area of the city of Lockhart was utilized to double for Forth Worth. Around early August 2024, Harrison Ford and the rest of the cast and crew members took over the city of Alamo, where they shot a few key portions. Furthermore, a couple of other cities that hosted the production of the Paramount+ show are Bartlett and Galveston.

Butte, Montana

Although most of the sophomore installment of ‘1923’ was taped across Texas, the filming unit returned to Butte, Montana, which was the primary shooting site of the first season. For the months of October and November 2024, they set up camp in Butte, specifically in Feely. They constructed a replica of the Dutton Ranch in Feely, where pivotal scenes involving the ranch were recorded. Reports also suggest that the parking lot of the Butte Civic Center at 1340 Harrison Avenue served as yet another important filming site, for which the production paid about $10,00o to the city.
