Written and directed by Phil Allocco, ‘5lbs of Pressure’ is a crime thriller movie that follows Adam, a former convict who has just gotten out of prison after serving 16 years behind bars for murder. To get his life back on track, he returns to his old neighborhood and seeks to make up for lost time with his son, Jimmy, who grew up without a father figure. However, Adam’s path to redemption is filled with peril, as Eli, the vengeful and dangerous brother of the man he killed, seeks revenge.
On the other hand, Mike works for his Uncle Leff, a drug-dealing gangster. Tired of a life of crime, Mike seeks ways to cut ties with his uncle and begin afresh. Soon, Adam and Mike’s paths collide, and they get a final shot at redemption. The action-packed tale unfolds in New York City, with the hustle and bustle of city life reflecting the commotion in the lives of Mike and Adam as they grapple with demons of their own.
5lbs of Pressure Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘5lbs of Pressure’ took place entirely in England, particularly in Manchester. From what we can tell, principal photography for the action film got underway around late September 2022 and went on for more than a month or so before wrapping up on November 5 of the same year. The director of photography, Sara Dean, tagged the director, Phil Allocco, and one of the producers, Isen Robbins, and expressed her gratitude, stating, “Safe travels home, gonna miss u guys! Thanks for trusting me with @5lbsofpressure 💫 it’s been an absolute joy to shoot!”
Manchester, England
Although the narrative is set in New York City, most of the pivotal sequences for ‘5lbs of Pressure’ were lensed in and around Manchester. Thanks to the similarities in the architecture and streets of the city, it perfectly doubled as the Big Apple. For instance, in October 2022, the filming unit transformed the Northern Quarter area of Manchester city center into the borough of Brooklyn. Several important indoor and outdoor scenes were also taped inside the Little Aladdin (Vegan Cafe) at 72 High Street. The cast and crew members were also spotted recording a few street basketball portions in the basketball court at Hulme Park on Stretford Road. The subway stations and trains of Manchester also stood in for the iconic New York City subways.
From the looks of it, multiple interior scenes set in NYC bars were also shot in actual bars of the city. During a conversation with Forbes, Rory Culki, who portrays Mike, discussed using Manchester locations to double for New York City. He stated, “I bought it. There are so many locations in this area, and they found the right corners to sell it. Phil Allocco, the film’s writer-director, grew up in Brooklyn, so I trusted him too, and his bullshit radar was going to be spot on too. I believed it all and was surprised because that was a huge question for me coming in.” Besides ‘5lbs of Pressure,’ Manchester hosted the production of several movies and TV shows, including ‘Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man,’ ‘Official Secrets,’ ‘Missing You,’ ‘Fool Me Once,’ ‘Run Away,’ and ‘Ripper Street.’
