Loosely based on the 2020 documentary titled ‘The Mole Agent’ by Maite Alberdi, Netflix’s ‘A Man on the Inside’ is a crime comedy drama series created by Mike Schur. The second season also revolves around the new adventures and misadventures of the retiree-turned-amateur private investigator, Charles Nieuwendyk, who must deal with a set of new suspects when a mysterious man tries to blackmail Jack Berenger, the president of his daughter’s alma mater, Wheeler College.
As Charles poses as a professor at the college for his investigation, he gets sidetracked when he crosses paths with the music teacher, Mona, who makes him reconsider opening himself up to a romantic connection for the first time since his wife’s tragic passing. After being inspired by his father’s changed personality, his daughter Emily also pursues her passion. Most of the story unfolds in and around Wheeler College, which serves as an additional character as it harbors the dark secret of the mysterious blackmailer.

Following the pattern of the inaugural iteration, a few portions were also seemingly shot in San Francisco, California. As per reports, principal photography for the sophomore round commenced in May 2025 and concluded after more than a month in late June of the same year. Upon the wrap of the second season’s shooting, Mary Elizabeth Ellis took to social media to extend her gratitude, stating, “That’s a wrap on A MAN ON THE INSIDE season two! What a cast, what a crew! Los Angeles County, California
Located in Southern California, Los Angeles County served as the primary production location for the second round of ‘A Man on the Inside.’ The scenes set in and around the Wheeler College, where Charles goes undercover, were seemingly lensed on the 124-acre campus of the California Institute of Technology at 1200 East California Boulevard in Pasadena, a city located just 11 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
Also known as CalTech, the private research university was founded in 1891 and consists of various areas that might feature in the show, such as the Beckman Auditorium, the Bridge Laboratory of Physics, the Kerckhoff Laboratory of the Biological Sciences, the Annenberg Center for Information Science and Technology, and more. Many areas of Los Angeles, the City of Angels, also reportedly feature in the show’s second season. Moreover, it is likely that the filming unit traveled to the coastal city of Santa Barbara to tape a few additional portions.
San Francisco, California
From what we can tell, the city of San Francisco also hosted the production of ‘A Man on the Inside’ season 2. Just like the debut season, the exterior of the property at 374 The Embarcadero seemingly represented the Kovalenko Investigations office. As for the exterior shots of the Pacific View building, the production team utilized the establishment located at 1201 California Street. The city is home to several landmarks and places of interest, including Mission Dolores, Chinatown, Golden Gate Park, and the Golden Gate Bridge, some of which you might be able to spot in the backdrop.
