The Carlos Sedes directorial, ‘A Widow’s Game,’ is a Spanish crime drama movie that follows the concealed double life of a woman named Maje, whose life turns upside down when her engineer husband of nearly one year, Antonio Navarro Cerdán, is found dead in a parking lot with multiple stab wounds. The consequent investigation by the Homicide Group leads the leading veteran detective to believe that it was a crime of passion, making Maje the prime suspect in the case. The suspicion jeopardises her double life, bringing her multiple affairs with different men to light.
Originally titled ‘La Viuda Negra,’ the Netflix film is inspired by the true crime of Patraix. The enthralling mystery thriller is brought to life by the compelling performances of Ivana Baquero, Carmen Machi, Tristán Ulloa, Joel Sánchez, Álex Gadea, Pablo Molinero, Pepe Ocio, and Ramón Ródenas. The story unfolds in the city of Valencia in Spain, as the police are busy examining the gruesome crime scene, and Maje is trying her best to hide her affairs.
A Widow’s Game Filming Locations
‘A Widow’s Game’ is primarily filmed in its entirety in Spain, especially in Valencia. As per reports, principal photography for the Spanish crime movie got underway around mid-November 2024 and continued for more than two months before getting wrapped up by the end of January 2025. The lead actor, Ivana Baquero, took to social media and shared her experience. She said, “And that’s a wrap! 🎥 So excited to share more about the latest film I’ve been working on. Valencia, Spain
In order to maintain a certain level of authenticity, the production team of ‘A Widow’s Game’ decided to shoot the movie on location, in the city of Valencia. which is the capital of the eponymous Spanish province and autonomous community. Nestled on the banks of the Turia, Valencia comprises a mix of modern and historical architecture, making it a versatile production location. Making the most of it, the filming team set up camp in various parts of the city, utilizing different neighborhoods and streets to lens pivotal sequences against suitable backdrops.
In the establishing shots, you are likely to spot several culturally significant landmarks and attractions across the city, such as Lonja de la Seda, the Serranos Gate, the Valencia City Hall, the Valencia Cathedral, Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, the Valencian Museum of Ethnology, the Museu de Belles Arts de València, the Botanical Garden of Valencia, and more. To be specific, the exterior of Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe at Ciudad de las Artes y de las Ciencias on Avenida del Professor López Piñero, 7, also features in quite a few scenes of ‘A Widow’s Game.’ Apart from the Netflix crime drama, the city of Valencia has hosted the production of numerous film and TV projects, including ‘Bad Education,’ ‘To Steal from a Thief,’ ‘The Uncovering,’ ‘The Boy Who Stole a Million,’ ‘Brigada Central,’ and ‘Antidisturbios.’
