A Manu Boyer directorial, Lifetime’s ‘Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story,’ is a recounting of a true story based on Genelle Guzman-McMillan’s memoir titled ‘Angel in the Rubble: The Miraculous Rescue of 9/11’s Last Survivor.’ The biographical drama movie centers on Genelle, a hardworking and honest transit worker in New York City. On the tragic day of September 11, 2001, she finds herself trapped under the rubble from the collapse of Tower One after a hijacked aircraft crashed straight into the World Trade Center.
Against all odds, Genelle manages to survive for about 27 hours by praying for survival and with the help of a mysterious man named Paul. The man stays with her and assures her that rescue workers are coming to pull her to safety. Once she survives the ordeal and recovers from her injuries, Genelle tries searching for Paul, but fails to find or confirm his identity. Thus, she begins to believe that he was an angel. The film is set in New York City at the time of the 9/11 attacks, with the destructive visuals highlighting the aftermath of the terrorist attack through the eyes of Genelle.

Cape Town, South Africa
The cast and crew of ‘Angel in the Rubble: The Genelle Guzman Story’ traveled to South Africa to bring to life the moving story of Genelle Guzman’s brutal experience under the rubble of Tower 1 at the World Trade Center on 9/11. In particular, the shooting took place at several spots in Cape Town on the southwest coast of the continent. The events in the film unfold in New York City, New York, making the decision to film in an international location a practical one driven by several factors. Shooting in NYC can be relatively expensive. Furthermore, recreating the sequences inside the building, in rubble and in other controlled environments to showcase the tragedy can also be perceived as sensitive and pose logistical issues.
South Africa has a solid reputation for doubling up as other settings due to its varied landscape, adaptable settings, and well-established film production infrastructure. The diverse environments, the cooperation of the local service-production company, advanced facilities, skilled technicians and talented local cast and crew ensured that the filming in the legislative capital proved to be a fun experience for the team. Aside from the Lifetime drama, Cape Town has hosted the shooting of a wide range of movies and television shows, such as ‘They Will Kill You,’ ‘Black Mirror,’ ‘Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die,’ ‘The Terminal List,’ ‘The Fall (2006),’ ‘Disclaimer,’ ‘Safe House,’ ‘Hitman,’ ‘The Dark Tower,’ and ‘Our Girl.’
