Created by Amanda Adolfsson, Netflix’s Swedish heist drama series ‘Barracuda Queens’ shows how five young women enjoy luxurious lifestyles fueled by carefully conducted, risky heists in their affluent neighborhood in Djursholm, Sweden. They resort to robbery after facing a cash crunch, thanks to a lavish vacation. The show is loosely based on the acts of the Lidingöigan, AKA the Lidingö League, an all-men gang that robbed many lavish homes in Sweden’s wealthy neighbourhoods during the 1990s. Season 2 is set five years after the events of Season 1, which takes place in 1995. Fresh into the new millennium, the ladies set their eyes on an eight-room apartment on Östermalm, to raise the funds for which, they chose to steal priceless art. Returning to lead the cast are Alva Bratt, Tindra Monsen, Sandra Zubovic, Sarah Gustafsson, and Tea Stjärne. They are joined by Izabella Scorupco, Cecilia Frode, Filip Berg, and Joel Spira.
Barracuda Queens Filming Locations
‘Barracuda Queens’ is filmed entirely in Sweden, specifically in Djursholm, and seemingly in Östermalm, in keeping with the locations in the narrative. Filming of the first season reportedly took place between June 2022 and January 2023. Principal photography for the sophomore season began in the second half of March 2024 and continued for almost three months before wrapping up in the second half of June the same year. Season 2 was no less than a reunion for the cast and crew, who had a blast throughout the filming schedule.
Djursholm, Sweden
Djursholm, a suburban district in the municipality of Danderyd, in Stockholm County, became the primary spot for filming. Various neighborhoods, streets, and spaces were used as backdrops for outdoor scenes. The crew may have also rented indoor spaces for requisite scenes. The suburb offers a mix of architectural styles, which range from neoclassical to modern. Some of the notable landmarks include Djursholm Castle, Villa Pauli, Djursholm Water Tower, and the Djursholm Chapel. Djursholm also boasts numerous villas built by renowned architects, each of which is a stunning representation of various architectural styles as mentioned above. Some of them are Villa Pauli, Gamla Djursholm, Prinsvillan, Villa Mittag-Leffler, and Villa Lagerkrantz. Parts of the show ‘Quicksand’ were also filmed in Djursholm.
Östermalm, Sweden
Östermalm, a district in the city of Stockholm in the eponymous county, may have also been used for some scenes. In season 2, the girls are motivated to steal pieces of art so that they can buy an apartment in the posh Swedish district. Naturally, the crew might have used the location for establishing shots and a few additional scenes. While it is one of Sweden’s most expensive districts, Östermalm also grabs onto its history, which can be spotted in architectural marvels like the Engelbrekt Church, Oscar’s Church, Hedvig Eleonora Church, the Nordic Museum, the Royal Swedish Opera House, and the Kvarteret Krubban. Other landmarks you can visit include Berwaldhallen, Kaknästornet, the Maritime Museum, and the National Library of Sweden. Östermalm served as one of the backdrops for ‘Love & Anarchy.’ Stockholm itself was used as a setting for ‘The Glass Dome.’
