Created by Spencer Hudnut, Taylor Sheridan, David Glasser, and John Linson, CBS’ ‘Marshals’ is a spin-off and direct sequel to ‘Yellowstone.’ The neo-Western crime drama series follows John Dutton’s youngest son, Kayce Dutton, who decides to begin a new chapter in the US Marshals Service after leaving the family’s Yellowstone Ranch behind him. Now, a part of the elite, specialized unit of US Marshals, Kayce combines his skills as a former US Navy SEAL and a rancher to fulfill his new responsibility of protecting Montana.
Kayce is helped by his teammates, Andrea Cruz, Belle Skinner, Miles Kittle, and Pete Calvin, as he tries to keep the region safe by fighting crime. Meanwhile, he finds himself dealing with family ties and battling his own demons. The fourth series in the ‘Yellowstone’ franchise features many familiar faces, as well as new ones, including Luke Grimes, Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, Brecken Merrill, Arielle Kebbel, Ash Santos, Tatanka Means, and Logan Marshall-Green. The arid and rugged landscape of Montana sets the tone for the slow-burning narrative and reflects the atmospheric tension in various sequences.
Marshals Filming Locations
Following in the footsteps of ‘Yellowstone,’ the shooting for ‘Marshals’ was conducted primarily in Utah, especially in Summit County. A minor chunk was also reportedly shot in Montana. From what we can tell, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the spin-off series commenced around August 2025 under the working title ‘Y: Marshals’ and lasted about four months before wrapping up in December of the same year. The production reportedly received a significant amount of funding from the Rural Utah Film Incentive program.
Summit County, Utah
While set in Montana, ‘Marshals’ is predominantly taped in Summit County, in the upper east side of Utah. It is also the filming spot for the first three installments of the original series, ‘Yellowstone.’ For the purpose of filming the spin-off, the production team visited several locales in the region. In particular, shooting was conducted in Park City, a picturesque mountain resort town. Nestled in the Wasatch Mountains, it is home to some of the world’s most renowned ski resorts — Deer Valley Resort and Park City Mountain — that offer world-class winter sports experiences.
The lush mountains, rugged terrain, remote roads, and small-town charm of Park City lend the visuals a western feel, enabling them to convincingly double as Montana. The production also settled on Utah Film Studios for a portion of filming. Situated at 4001 Kearns Boulevard in Park City, the facility comprises 3 fully equipped soundstages spanning about 45,000 square feet, in addition to production offices and other spaces. Aside from ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘Marshals,’ the complex has hosted productions of shows and movies such as ‘Wind River,’ ‘Damsel,’ and ‘In the Vault.’ Some sequences were also taped in the ranches in the region to further complement the tone of the narrative.
Montana
Since Montana is the primary setting of ‘Marshals,’ it is only natural for the filming unit to record a few scenes, mostly establishing and exterior shots, on location. Known for the Rocky Mountains as well as its rugged terrains, Montana has hosted the production of numerous film and TV projects over the years. Some of the notable ones include ‘The Revenant,’ ‘The Unholy Trinity,’ ‘Rust,’ ‘Return to Lonesome Dove,’ ‘Yellowstone,’ ‘1883,’ and ‘1923.’
