Adapted from the eponymous 2019 novel written by David Koepp, ‘Cold Storage’ is a science fiction action horror movie starring Joe Keery as Teacake and Georgina Campbell as Naomi, two young employees working a night shift at a self-storage company constructed on a site that used to be a military base decades ago. What appears to be just another shift becomes a nightmare when a dangerous, parasitic fungus escapes from a secret, abandoned government base where it had been kept contained.
Over time, the deadly microorganism rapidly mutates and takes over the minds and bodies of everything in the facility, including humans. Now, Teacake and Naomi must enlist the help of a retired bioterror operative, Robert Quinn, to confront and contain the invisible yet dangerous fungus and save humankind from extinction. The Jonny Campbell directorial features a talented ensemble cast comprising Joe Keery, Liam Neeson, Georgina Campbell, Sosie Bacon, Vanessa Redgrave, and Lesley Manville. The horrific yet comedic tale unfolds mostly within the facility, which serves as an additional character, hiding a deadly secret beneath the facade of a self-storage company.
Cold Storage Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘Cold Storage’ took place primarily in Italy and Morocco, especially in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Campania, and Ouarzazate. According to reports, principal photography for the Joe Keery starrer got underway in the last week of March 2023 and continued for more than two months before wrapping up in early June of the same year. One of the crew members, La Orla, expressed her gratitude for being a part of the film. She stated, “IT’S A WRAP!! So many beautiful people in this movie! And how much less tiring it is to get up at dawn if you have a team of friends working with you! Georgina and Joe thanks for your energy and kindness. I love you both!”
Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, Italy
A major chunk of ‘Cold Storage’ was reportedly lensed in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, which comprises the city of Rome and various other surrounding comuni. The production team set up camp at De Paolis Studios, where they shot numerous key indoor portions involving the self-storage company where Teacake and Naomi work. Located at Via Tiburtina, 521, in Rome, the studio is known for offering filmmakers modern production facilities.
In addition, the scenes involving the abandoned underground military base were supposedly taped inside the Soratte Bunker at 00060 Sant’Oreste under Monte Soratte. Constructed between 1937 and 1943, it is a real-life underground bunker and air raid shelter that was part of a subterranean bunker complex. Apart from ‘Cold Storage,’ the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital has served as a production location for many movies and TV shows over the years, such as ‘Immaculate,’ ‘The Pope’s Exorcist,’ ‘The First Omen,’ ‘Medici,’ and ‘The Beauty.’
Campania, Italy
The filming unit of ‘Cold Storage’ also traveled to the administrative region of Campania to tape pivotal sequences for the body horror movie. In particular, the city of Caserta features prominently in numerous sequences of the sci-fi film. Popularly known for the 18th-century Bourbon Royal Palace of Caserta, the city is located at the foot of the Campanian Subapennine mountain range, which can seemingly be seen in the backdrop of multiple exterior scenes.
Ouarzazate, Morocco
For shooting purposes, the production team of the Jonny Campbell directorial also set up camp in Ouarzazate, a city situated in south-central Morocco. Numerous outdoor scenes involving rugged landscapes were recorded on location in and around the city. Also known as the Door of the Desert, Ouarzazate is not only a filming destination but also a tourist destination popular for the Draa Valley, the desert, and Aït Benhaddou, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
