From the mind of Tim Federle, Freeform’s ‘Coven Academy’ is a horror comedy drama series that follows a trio of teenage amateur witches — Briar, Tegan, and Sasha — who are training to be the best at an elite magic boarding school, Crescent Veil, in the heart of New Orleans alongside a group of cunning yet charming warlock peers. The witches-in-training navigate the complications at the school, such as dark secrets, power dynamics, and politics. However, their lives are upended when they learn that they are destined to work together to protect the city from ancient, deadly, and mysterious forces. Meanwhile, Briar, Tegan, and Sasha handle their personal battles with heartbreak and friendships. The fantasy show is set in a fictionalized version of New Orleans, Louisiana, which serves as the narrative’s beating heart through its visuals.
Coven Academy Filming Locations
‘Coven Academy’ is filmed entirely in British Columbia, especially in and around Vancouver. According to reports, the pilot was shot over the course of a couple of weeks in June 2025. After the show was greenlit, principal photography for the rest of the debut season commenced in early December 2025 and continued for a couple of months before wrapping up by early March 2026. Thanks to the vastness and versatility of British Columbia, it serves as an ideal filming destination for projects set in different American cities, including the Freeform production.
Vancouver, British Columbia
Although ‘Coven Academy’ is set in New Orleans, Louisiana, most of its pivotal sequences were lensed in the sprawling city of Vancouver. The production team took over numerous streets and neighborhoods across the city and transformed them into the Crescent City. To be specific, they set up camp in Hollywood North’s historic Gastown neighborhood, where they shot several important indoor and outdoor scenes for the horror series. For instance, during the shooting process, the cast and crew members were spotted taping key portions around Harbour Light Alley and 5 Powell Street.
In the strategic establishing and aerial shots of Vancouver, numerous buildings and landmarks feature in the backdrop, such as Living Shangri-La, Paradox Hotel Vancouver, Vancouver House, Harbour Centre, The Melville, MNP Tower, and Fairmont Pacific Rim. Over the years, the city has served as a prominent production location for numerous movies and TV shows. Besides ‘Coven Academy,’ it features in ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma,’ ‘Backrooms,’ ‘The Monkey,’ ‘Final Destination: Bloodlines,’ ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose,’ ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?,’ ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,’ ‘The Haunting of Bly Manor,’ and ‘The Fall of the House of Usher.’
