Inspired by true events surrounding a Vietnam War veteran named Elías Delgado and the Pozzetto restaurant massacre of 1986, Netflix’s ‘Fugue State 1986,’ originally titled ‘Estado de Fuga 1986,’ is a Colombian period crime drama series that revolves around the twisted friendship between a young literature student and aspiring writer named León and a war veteran named Jeremías. When the former learns the dark truth about Jeremías, who was responsible for the mass killing in a restaurant in Bogotá, his life turns upside down.
However, León fails to remember the details of the days leading up to the massacre. In order to get to the bottom of the truth, he gets closer to the killer but ends up coming face-to-face with demons of his own. It turns out that their shared passion for literature had turned into something violent. Featuring compelling performances from Andrés Parra, Carolina Gómez, José Restrepo, and Camila Jurado, the thriller series unfolds in and around Bogotá, which endured a tragic mass killing in the 1980s, affecting the entire nation of Colombia.
Fugue State 1986 Filming Locations
‘Fugue State 1986’ is reportedly filmed in its entirety on location in Colombia, particularly in Bogotá. From what we can tell, principal photography for the period drama series took place in the spring of 2025, over the course of several weeks around the months of May and June. Cristian Rie, one of the background actors, took to social media to extend his gratitude for being a part of the project. He stated (translated), “In the top of my favorite film directors is Mr. #carlosmoreno and it is an immense pleasure to be able to tell you that I have worked for him on several occasions, within wonderful projects such as #estadodefuga1986…”
Bogotá, Colombia
To bring the story of ‘Fugue State 1986’ to life, the production team settled on Bogotá in Colombia. Staying true to the setting, several locations in Bogotá were utilized to complement the setting. Being the capital of the South American country, it boasts a diverse landscape that reflects the region’s past as well as its development over the decades. Its unique blend of mid-century and colonial architecture, found in the historically preserved buildings, ancient structures, chaotic commercial markets, narrow streets, and urban constructions, enables La Atenas Suramericana (The South American Athens) to portray 1980s Colombia convincingly without major adjustments.
The aforementioned factors, along with the city’s cultural richness, equipped production studios, tax incentives, proficient crew members, a talented pool of actors, and first-rate infrastructure for a vast range of productions, make Bogotá a growing hub for the industry. Therefore, the team could easily convey the politically charged atmospheric tension and historical transformation of the narrative. Over the years, Bogotá has hosted the production of a variety of movies and television shows, such as ‘Sound of Freedom,’ ‘Mile 22,’ ‘Freelance,’ ‘The Belko Experiment,’ ‘Dominique,’ ‘War,’ ‘Running with the Devil,’ ‘Sniper: Ultimate Kill,’ ‘Narcos,’ ‘El Capo,’ ‘The Mafia Dolls,’ and ‘Generation Y.’
