In Hulu’s ‘Eenie Meanie,’ we get acquainted with a former teenage getaway driver named Edie, also known as Eenie Meanie, who has been leading a reformed life away from her criminal past. However, when her ex-boyfriend, John, gets entangled in a life-threatening situation, her former employer gives her the opportunity to rescue John. Agreeing to become a part of the mission, Edie finds herself behind the wheel again as she gets pulled back to the past she has been running from. Written and directed by Shawn Simmons, the heist comedy thriller movie is packed with action and car chase sequences against some interesting backdrops, making the locations an important aspect of the overall narrative.
Eenie Meanie Filming Locations
‘Eenie Meanie’ was filmed in its entirety in Ohio, specifically in Cuyahoga County, Toledo, and Sandusky. Principal photography for the Samara Weaving starrer got underway in April 2024 under the working title ‘Stickshift’ and continued for a couple of months before wrapping up in late June of the same year. As per reports, additional filming took place between January 20 and February 10, 2025.
One of the crew members, Ryan Ferguson, talked about his experience shooting the Hulu project. He wrote, “Probably one of the best working experience I’ve had in a really long time! It’s still weird that it’s all come to an end and I’m not even sure how to process it all yet but one thing is for sure I’m gonna miss working with everyone and seeing all the stupid faces every day. Also want to make a special shout-out to @crushgrips for twisting my arm and bringing me out to Ohio to work on this rad picture and for always having my back and loving me even when I’m being an absolute pill to even be around. Ben you’ll always be my #1 and I’ll love ya forever! That’s a wrap on “Eenie Meanie” till we all do it again…that’s your cue.”
Cuyahoga County, Ohio
For the purpose of filming, the cast and crew of ‘Eenie Meanie’ visited several locations in Cuyahoga County in the northeastern part of Ohio. A portion of filming took place in its county seat, Cleveland, located on the southern edge of Lake Erie. Shooting was also conducted in the streetcar suburb of Lakewood, about 6 miles west of Downtown Cleveland. In particular, the old neighborhood of Slavic Village on the southeast side of the city is where a few scenes of the fast-paced action thriller were taped.
Toledo, Ohio
A chunk of ‘Eenie Meanie’ was also lensed in the city of Toledo on the western edge of Lake Erie in Lucas County. The process of filming reportedly resulted in the disruption of the bus routes 10L and 14 of the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority (TARTA), leading the drivers to take an alternative road until filming wrapped up. The historic neighborhood of Westmoreland faced several street closures — Grand Avenue (between Mount Vernon Avenue and Parkside Boulevard), Richmond Road (Bancroft Street and Woodruff Avenue), as well as West Richmond Road (Bancroft Street and Richmond Road). A residential property at the edge of the Grand Avenue and Richmond Road doubled up as a shooting site for the movie.
In the area, the team recorded some action sequences that required the use of prop guns and fake blood for practical effects. According to reports, the team members were present on the premises of Hollywood Casino at 1968 Miami Street to shoot car chase sequences. For about two weeks, the team utilized the infrastructure and amenities of the 125,000 square feet facility to paint the electrifying and vibrant visual canvas of the movie. In an interview with What’s On Disney Plus, director Shawn Simmons opened up about the hiccups the crew faced while bringing the film to life, especially related to the high-octane action sequences. “Well, we’re definitely in this world where budgets are smaller than they should be because we’re dealing with streaming, we’re dealing with theatrical, you know, trying to find ways to overlap the car work with the rest of the movie,” he said.
Talking about how they managed to make it work, Shawn added, “Me and Paul Jennings, incredible director, stunt guy from “The Dark Knight” and one of my favorite car chases, ‘Jack Reacher.’ which I based this kind of movie on style-wise. We kind (of) got so much done together in the vision of those car chases that it allowed me to go off to one set and do the character work. And anytime they needed me with the characters and the actors on that set, I’d jump over there. So that’s one way in which we accomplished the movie in a way that the budget probably wouldn’t allow otherwise.”
Sandusky, Ohio
A significant portion of ‘Eenie Meanie’ was reportedly taped in the city of Sandusky, which is located on the southern shore of Lake Erie in Ohio’s Erie County. Known as the Home of Cedar Point, Sandusky serves as an ideal production location due to its versatile landscape and accessibility to neighboring islands such as Kelleys Island, South Bass Island, Middle Bass Island, and North Bass Island. In the backdrop, you might be able to spot several local landmarks, including the Follett House Museum, the Cooke-Dorn House, the Ohio Veterans Home Museum, Cedar Point Shores, and Castaway Bay.
