Where is Netflix’s Land of Sin Filmed?

Created by Peter Grönlund, Netflix’s ‘Land of Sin,’ originally titled ‘Synden,’ follows a seasoned detective, Dani, whose life turns upside down when a case hits too close to home. When a teenager named Silas is found dead at a farmhouse in the Bjäre peninsula, fear and doubt quickly take hold of the countryside. With a newly graduated officer named Malik as her partner, Dani begins her investigation into the mystery, only to find herself ensnared in a much larger conspiracy, rooted in familial secrets, dynastic feuds, and a deep patriarchal rot at the heart of it all. Thus, her quest for answers soon transforms into a larger battle with the region’s corrupt underbelly. The setting of this Swedish psychological thriller is intimately tied to its storyline, laying a thematic foundation to Dani’s journey.

Land of Sin Filming Locations

Filming for ‘Land of Sin’ took place in Sweden’s Skåne County, with several key regions in the country appearing on screen. The crew went with an on-site approach, often using real-life locations as backdrops. Reportedly, shooting began around March 18, 2024, but was halted when actor Peter Gantman suffered a serious dog bite injury. As per the director Peter Grönlund, Gantman only had ten days of filming left, but following the injury, the production of his scenes was delayed by about four months. Filming ultimately wrapped up in late October of the same year.

Skåne County, Sweden

‘Land of Sin’ was filmed in its entirety in Skåne County, the southernmost county of Sweden. Also referred to as Scania in English, the region is famous for its geographical diversity, ranging from its rolling countryside to its expansive shoreline. Both of these natural marvels served as backdrops for the show in several sequences, painting a rich visual canvas. In particular, the crew took over the surroundings of Skurup, a municipality within Scania, where filming took place in a foggy setting, adding to the show’s vibe. Some of the major sequences were also filmed in wetlands, with the cast and crew sometimes up to their knees in water. Specialized body suits were designed to make the production easier, showcasing the team’s commitment to filming on-site.

Alongside Skurup, a number of other locations in Skåne County served as filming locations for the series, with the scenes transitioning from rural to urban backdrops. The crew spent some time around Martins Konditori & Kafé, a bakery cum cafe situated at Södra Förstadsgatan 88, 214 20, in Malmö, making it likely that a few shots were taken in the area. Located less than 30 miles from Skurup, Malmö is a pleasant coastal city renowned for its cobblestoned city center, Lilla Torg. The crew spent several days filming in and around this region, likely taping many familiar landmarks along the way. Many local diners, kiosks, and other establishments served as pit stops, and might have even been captured on camera.

The crew also set up camp in what appears to be an indoor gas station, which was likely refitted to match the requirements of key sequences in the show. A few sequences might have been lensed next to a fine carpentry shop, which, along with its neighboring fixtures, likely added to the show’s rustic atmosphere. Beyond this, the creative time found itself returning again and again to more natural settings, with lush green farms, quaint huts, and isolated roadways adding constant visual highlights to the show. In addition to ‘Land of Sin,’ Skåne County has served as the filming location for a number of other acclaimed titles, ranging from classics such as ‘The Seventh Seal’ and ‘Wild Strawberries,’ to contemporary movies and television shows such as ‘Lilya 4-Ever,’ ‘Jackass,’ ‘Sound of Noise,’ ‘The Bridge,’ and ‘Diary of a Ditched Girl.’
