Loosely inspired by the eponymous 1950 British movie directed by Henry Cass, ‘Last Holiday’ is a 2006 romantic comedy-drama movie that centers on a humble and shy department store assistant named Georgia Byrd, who is romantically drawn to one of her colleagues, Sean Matthews. Despite having enough savings in her bank account to have a luxury holiday, she has yet to leave Louisiana. Her perspective on life changes when a CT scan reveals that she has merely three weeks to live due to a terminal brain condition.
After receiving the life-changing news, Georgia decides to quit her job, cash out her savings, and embark on a luxurious European trip before death comes knocking at her door. Helmed by Wayne Wang, the film features various renowned personalities and actors, including Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, Timothy Hutton, Alicia Witt, Giancarlo Esposito, and Jane Adams. The protagonist’s life amidst the hustle and bustle of New Orleans, Louisiana, tends to reflect the internal struggles of her unfulfilled desires. Those desires are satiated when she starts living luxuriously against the lavish backdrops of Europe.
Last Holiday Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘Last Holiday’ took place in Louisiana, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland, specifically in New Orleans, Karlovy Vary, Prague, Tyrol, and Ticino. From what we can tell, principal photography for the Queen Latifah starrer commenced in late 2004 and went on for several weeks before wrapping up in early 2005.
New Orleans, Louisiana
A significant chunk of ‘Last Holiday’ was lensed in the city of New Orleans, which is situated along the Mississippi River. The scenes involving Georgia’s residence were reportedly shot in and around the property located at 1210 Vallette Street. The streets around the house also feature in the backdrop of various outdoor scenes. The filming unit set up camp outside of a church on First Street to shoot key portions for the rom-com.

During an interview with Blackfilm, LL Cool J, who portrays Sean Matthews, in ‘Last Holiday,’ was asked about his experience of working in NOLA. He explained, “It was great working in New Orleans. It was wonderful. There were beautiful tours. They treated us great. I had a great time. It was great food. It was great music…” It is likely that you may spot a few other landmarks and buildings associated with the city in the backdrop, such as St. Louis Cathedral, Crescent City Connection, Hancock Whitney Center, Place St. Charles, Plaza Tower, and more.
Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic
Georgia’s luxurious European trip takes her to the spa city of Karlovy Vary, located at the confluence of the Ohře and Teplá rivers in the Czech Republic. The Karlovy Vary Airport at K Letišti 132 in the village of Olšová Vrata, which is a few kilometers away from the city center, was transformed into a film set as the protagonist lands in the city. During her visit, she stays in the Presidential Suite at the luxurious Grandhotel Pupp, situated at Mírové nám. 2 in Karlovy Vary.

Since the hotel scenes were filmed on location, the venue’s impressive amenities, multiple rooms, hallways, restaurants, and more also feature in ‘Last Holiday.’ The cast and crew members were also spotted taping market scenes at Vřídelní 35 and cemetery scenes at Ivana Petroviče Pavlova 16.
Prague, Czech Republic
The production team of ‘Last Holiday’ also seemingly traveled to the capital of the Czech Republic — Prague — for shooting purposes. During the aforementioned interview, LL was also asked about his experience of shooting in Prague. He responded, “Prague was lonely and it was cold, but at the same time it was incredible. The museums were nice. The museums and architecture were incredible. The food was great. Karlovi Vari, which was the ski resort, I was there alone. I was bouncing off the walls. I was going crazy. It was beautiful, but I was going nuts. In my own mind, it was really tough for me, but that’s part of the journey.”
Tyrol, Austria

The historical region of Tyrol, located in western Austria, also served as a production location for ‘Last Holiday.’ The picturesque backdrop of the valleys and hills surrounding the region elevated the visual elements of the movie. Tyrol has served as a filming site for numerous other movies, including ‘As It Is in Heaven,’ ‘Die Lederhosenaffäre,’ ‘Sissi,’ ‘Echo Park,’ and ‘Matti: Hell Is for Heroes.’
Ticino, Switzerland

For the purpose of shooting, the filming unit of the rom-com film also set up camp in Ticino, officially known as the Republic and Canton of Ticino. To be specific, multiple outdoor scenes for ‘Last Holiday’ were taped around Lago di Luzzone and the popular Luzzone arch dam. Surrounded by peaks of the Adula Alps, the reservoir proves to be a scenic production location for a wide range of projects, including the LL Cool J starrer.
