Inspired by the true story of Thailand’s first unicorn startup, Netflix’s ‘Mad Unicorn’ is a biographical Thai drama series created by Jira Maligool and Vanridee Pongsittisak. The narrative centers upon Santi, who grew up in a poverty-stricken household in the mountains with dreams of becoming successful. His ambition and drive allow him to find a unique opportunity to start a business in the express delivery industry. But when he discusses the idea with an entrepreneurial tycoon named Kanin, he betrays him by stealing his business idea and launching his own brand.
Now, more determined than ever, Santi enters the world of entrepreneurship by launching his company, Thunder Express, and navigates several aspects of running a business, including betrayal and cutthroat competition. In order to overtake Kanin’s business empire, he joins forces with a competent financier named Xiaoyu and Ruijie, a talented coding prodigy. Originally titled ‘Songkhram Song Duan,’ the show consists of impressive performances from several talented Thai actors, including Natara Nopparatayapon, Janeyeh Jiranorraphat, Dr. Palang Rocksilp, Thaneth Warakulnukroh, and Pachara Chirathivat. As the story unfolds in Bangkok, the themes of betrayal and entrepreneurial competition are portrayed vividly against the city’s commercial backdrop.
Mad Unicorn Filming Locations
The shooting of ‘Mad Unicorn’ reportedly took place in Thailand, supposedly in Bangkok. The commotion and fast life associated with the South Asian country complement the merciless market where Santi competes with an established business tycoon to cement his place in the entrepreneurial world. Officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand, it served as the ideal filming site since the real-life-based narrative unfolds there.
Bangkok, Thailand
Intending to keep the narrative as authentic as possible, the production team of ‘Mad Unicorn’ set up camp on location in the capital of Thailand — Bangkok. Also known as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon in Thai, Bangkok is not only considered a regional force in pop culture, but it has also made its mark in the finance and business sector. Since the drama series revolves around the politics involved with a new business, the capital makes for a suitable production location.
Bangkok also consists of contrasting architecture, as the modern and tall buildings are accompanied by several historical and culturally significant landmarks, such as Baiyoke Tower II, the Victory Monument, the Grand Palace, the Giant Swing, Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan, the Democracy Monument, and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. In the establishing shots or exterior scenes, you might be able to notice some of them in the backdrop.
Given the fact that ‘Mad Unicorn’ portrays the commercial aspect of Bangkok, it is highly likely that the cast and crew members made the most of the capital’s Sathon Business District to add more authenticity to the story. For the interior portions, the filming team either took over a few establishments in and around the city or utilized a soundstage or two at a film studio. Over the years, Bangkok has also served as the primary filming site for various movies, including ‘Good Morning, Vietnam,’ ‘Heaven & Earth,’ and ‘Beautiful Boxer.’
