Where is Mercy for None Filmed? Shooting Locations of the Netflix Show

Directed by Choi Sung-eun, Netflix’s South Korean action drama series ‘Mercy for None’ (‘Gwang-jang’) follows a gangster whose thirst for revenge sends him down a bloody road from which returning seems impossible. An adaptation of the Webtoon webcomic ‘Plaza Wars: Mercy for None,’ the story centers on Nam Gi-jun, who gave up his life in organized crime 11 years ago. However, the ambush and death of his younger brother Gi-seok compels him to come out of retirement and track down the culprits. His endeavor makes him lock horns with numerous mob bosses and criminal organizations, including the young mob heir Gu Jun-mo. As dangerous as his mission gets with time, stopping is not an option for Nam Gi-jun, no matter how many people he has to kill. Underscored by secrets, lies, deceit, and betrayal, ‘Mercy for None’ paints a brutal picture of vengeance highlighted using gritty visuals.

Mercy for None Filming Locations

‘Mercy for None’ is filmed entirely in South Korea, specifically in Seoul, the country’s capital. Production reportedly began in October 2023 and continued for several months before wrapping up in March 2024. The ensemble cast and the crew joined forces to turn Seoul into a gritty landscape with a noir underbelly fueled by crime. During the production press conference at the Ambassador Seoul Pullman hotel in Jung-gu, Seoul, director Choi was quoted by allkpop saying how “having such talented ‘ingredients’ allowed [him] great creative freedom in making the show.”

Seoul, South Korea

Seoul, the seat of the South Korean government and part of the larger Seoul Metropolitan Area in South Korea, became the base for the show’s production. One of the largest metropolitan economies in the world, it is the main hub of the country’s film and TV industry. This naturally makes it home to many top-tier production studios, one or more of which were seemingly utilized for the indoor scenes in the series and the numerous action sequences that required controlled environments. The crew seemingly accessed real parking lots and other tight spaces to better incorporate close-quarter combat scenes.

Several urban areas and neighborhoods of Seoul were used to tape the outdoor shots and establishing shots, all of which have been aptly showcased to highlight the unemotional nature of the revenge-driven drama series. A global tourist destination, Seoul boasts numerous landmarks, like the Deoksugung Palace, Lotte World, Gwanghwamun, Seongsan Bridge, and the Olympic Park. It also hosts many international festivals, like the Seoul Street Art Festival, Seoul Lantern Festival, Seoul International Fireworks Festival, Seoul Spring Flower Festival, and Seoul Eulalia Festival. Some other shows that have been filmed in Seoul are ‘Squid Game,’ ‘XO, Kitty,’ ‘Extracurricular,’ and ‘Kingdom.’
