A spin-off of ‘Naked and Afraid,’ Discovery Channel’s ‘Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown’ is a survival reality series that brings together 14 expert survivalists in seven teams hailing from four different countries, including the United States, Mexico, Australia, and Brazil. While competing in an intense 40-day primitive bushcraft competition, the seven pairs must face challenges across three unpredictable, wild ecosystems in South Africa’s wilderness, testing their survival skills.
Apart from extreme conditions and dangerous terrains, the expert survivalists also encounter apex predators, including leopards, crocodiles, rhinos, hippos, and Zambezi sharks. Each team must earn points by excelling at survival tasks and challenges to avoid elimination and gain access to essential survival tools and rewards, such as shelter, water, and food. Their objective is to make their respective nations proud and to earn the largest cash prize in the franchise’s history — $200,000. The survival competition primarily takes place across the wilderness of South Africa, with contestants covering some of the harshest terrain as they try to survive.
Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown Filming Locations
‘Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown’ is filmed in South Africa, especially across the Zululand District Municipality. From what we can tell, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the spin-off series took place sometime in the latter half of 2025, over the course of several weeks, as the contestants go head-to-head in Africa’s wilderness.

For the purpose of filming ‘Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown,’ the cast and crew travelled to Zululand District Municipality, located in the northern part of the KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa. All the challenges that unfold in the lives of the cast members as they strive to survive in the South African wilderness were taped against the rugged terrains of the district. With unforgiving environmental conditions, ranging from sweltering heat to scarce sources of water, as well as the presence of dangerous apex predators, shooting in the region tested the abilities of the survivalists to the maximum. The fact that they had to build their own shelter and hunt for food made their experience even more grueling.
In particular, a portion of the shooting was reportedly carried out in St. Lucia, a coastal village nestled in the heart of Zululand. Dubbed “Home of the Hippos,” the tranquil settlement near iSimangaliso Wetland Park houses about 800 wild hippos and hundreds of crocodiles. It goes without saying that the village’s proximity to dense wilderness and predator-inhabited ecosystems likely posed several logistical issues and other challenges as the crew of ‘Naked and Afraid: Global Showdown’ captured the journey of the contestants. Therefore, extra precautions were seemingly taken to ensure the safety of the team as they wrapped up shooting in the region.
