Returning as a co-creator of yet another family comedy series after ‘Schitt’s Creek,’ Daniel Levy teams up with Rachel Sennott for Netflix’s ‘Big Mistakes.’ The narrative revolves around Nicky and Morgan, two directionless, hopeless siblings. The former is a full-time pastor and a part-time jewel thief, while his sister is his partner in crime. When the duo attempts a disorganized theft to help their dying grandmother, they find themselves pulled into the world of organized crime.
While they are blackmailed into completing a series of life-threatening assignments by dangerous people, the brother-sister pair keep looking for ways to get out of the chaos, but they keep falling deeper. The high-stakes crime thriller show features Daniel Levy, Taylor Ortega, Laurie Metcalf, Abby Quinn, Boran Kuzum, and Jack Innanen, and takes place in a variety of settings, including the siblings’ home and the church where Nicky serves as a pastor.
Big Mistakes Filming Locations
Production on Dan Levy’s ‘Big Mistakes’ takes place across different areas of New Jersey, specifically Edison, Union County, Warren County, Essex County, and Jersey City. A minor chunk was also reportedly shot in Puerto Rico. Principal photography for the debut season of the comedy series got underway in August 2025 and concluded in October of the same year. Boran Kuzum, who plays the role of Yusuf, described it as one of the most exciting journeys of his life and career. He added, “To this incredible team — thank you endlessly for believing in me, trusting me, taking me from my home in Istanbul and bringing me to our beautiful set in New Jersey. Thank you for always making me feel at home, for your friendship, guidance, and support.”
Edison, New Jersey
In order to paint the visual canvas of ‘Big Mistakes,’ the production team settled on Edison in Middlesex County, New Jersey. In September 2025, the cast and crew were spotted filming in several locations in the township. According to reports, the scenes set in the Malinowski residence in the show were actually shot in a residential property on Old Post Road. Additionally, Edison Millwork and Hardware, located at 9 Old Post Road, was transformed into Morelli’s Hardware over the course of shooting. The owner of the local hardware store, Angelo Mancuso, took to social media to express his excitement about the establishment being a part of the series.
Speaking with My Central Jersey, Mancuso shared that the crew took great care of both the store and its staff during filming. “They treated us very well, like royalty, and I couldn’t be happier to have them find my store during our 50th anniversary year,” he said, highlighting that the shooting coincided with the Golden Jubilee anniversary of Edison Millwork and Hardware. It opened its doors in June 1976 and has remained an independently run business.
Mancuso was grateful that his store had bagged the opportunity and noted that its authenticity was likely why the team chose it to double as the makeshift headquarters of Linda Morelli’s campaign for Mayor. Holding on to hope for further collaborations, He stated, “I’m hopeful that Netflix picks up the series because it is an eight‑show pilot, and if it does, they’ll be back. Hopefully, from now on, I’ll be known as Morelli’s Hardware, too — that’s the name of the store in the show.” Furthermore, the turmoil in the Morellis’ lives was also captured in other areas around Edison.
Union County, New Jersey
The filming unit of ‘Big Mistakes’ also set up camp at several locations across Union County, including Union Township. In addition, they stopped by the Town Hall in Springfield Township, located within the Raritan Valley and Rahway Valley regions. As per reports, they utilized the hall for three days in September 2025, for which they paid $10,000 to the township. The cast and crew members were also spotted taping pivotal sequences in and around Adams Fine Clothing at 1275 Springfield Avenue in New Providence. The scene where a character needs to be fitted for a suit was shot at this boutique.
Other Locations in New Jersey
For shooting purposes, Dan Levy and the rest of the cast and crew traveled to various other locations in New Jersey, possibly including Jersey City. In the town of Hackettstown, the Hackettstown Livestock Auction at 225 West Stiger Street served as a key production location, which reportedly features in the fifth episode of the inaugural season. Furthermore, the township of Irvington, located in Essex County, also hosted the production of ‘Big Mistakes.’
San Juan, Puerto Rico
In October 2025, the production team of ‘Big Mistakes’ made the most of the exotic and scenic landscapes of the capital of Puerto Rico, San Juan, to shoot several important scenes. Upon the conclusion of the first season’s production, the head of the makeup department, Kaela Dobson, took to social media and stated, “Getting to spend our last week shooting an episode in Puerto Rico was the 🍒 on top to an amazing season! Get ready to laugh everyone!!!”
