From the mind of Jorge Torregrossa, Netflix’s ‘City of Shadows’ is a Spanish crime thriller drama series that revolves around a gruesome murder that shakes the entirety of Barcelona to its core. When burned remains are discovered in one of Gaudí’s most iconic buildings, La Pedrera – Casa Milà, a disgraced detective named Milo Malart is called back into duty to join forces with Deputy Inspector Rebeca Garrido and get to the bottom of the case. While the two competent investigators dig deep to identify the perpetrator, they must also confront issues in their own personal lives. Originally titled ‘Ciudad de Sombras,’ the show features a talented ensemble cast comprising Isak Férriz, Verónica Echegui, Ana Wagener, María Adánez, and Manolo Solo. The suspenseful tale unfolds in Barcelona, Spain, where the detectives scour the streets to solve the mystery of the horrific crime.
City of Shadows Filming Locations
‘City of Shadows’ is reportedly filmed in its entirety in Spain, specifically in and around the Province of Barcelona. From what we can tell, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the Spanish show seemingly got underway in early 2025. It continued for a few months before supposedly wrapping up by March of the same year. Albert Green, one of the crew members, took to social media as the day of the show’s premiere approached and stated, “…it makes me very happy to have had the great pleasure of working with two people I already admired and that, after working with them, I admire even more @jorgtorregrossa and @manwelsolo (among other wonderful people you already have I’ll tell).”
Province of Barcelona, Spain
A major portion of ‘City of Shadows’ was reportedly lensed in the Province of Barcelona, located in Catalonia in northeastern Spain. Being an additional character within the narrative, Barcelona and its surrounding areas were heavily utilized to add an extra layer of authenticity. The scene where the burned body was found was reportedly shot on location in and around La Pedrera – Casa Milà at Pg. de Gràcia, 92 in the district of the Eixample.
Shooting of various important scenes also reportedly took place around a couple of landmarks, including the Basílica de la Sagrada Família at Carrer de Mallorca, 401, in the Eixample, Palau Güell at Carrer Nou de la Rambla, 3-5, in the neighborhood of Ciutat Vella, andCasa Batlló at Pg. de Gràcia, 43, in the Eixample. The cast and crew members were also spotted taping key portions in Plaça Joan Güell and its nearby areas. The filming unit of ‘City of Shadows’ also traveled outside of the city of Barcelona and set up camp at Cripta de la Colònia Güell at Carrer Reixach, 6, in Santa Coloma de Cervelló. The municipality of Gavà, situated in the Baix Llobregat comarca, also hosted the production of the series.
