Based on Anna Ekberg’s eponymous novel, Netflix’s ‘The Secret Woman’ is a Danish mystery thriller drama movie that revolves around Louise Andersen and the peaceful life she leads on the quiet Norwegian island of Hidra with her beloved boyfriend, Joachim. The picture-perfect couple also owns a cute little cafe on the island. On one summer day, Louise’s life turns upside down when a stranger approaches her and claims that her real name is Helene Söderberg, a woman who disappeared from Denmark three years earlier and is the owner of a shipping empire.
Curious to find out whether the man’s claims are true, Louise leaves Joachim and embarks on a mission of self-discovery, learning that she is married and the mother of a young boy. As she uncovers the mishaps of the night she vanished, the young woman discovers a shocking truth. Originally titled ‘Den Hemmelige Kvinde,’ the Barbara Topsøe-Rothenborg directorial is set in Norway and Denmark, highlighting two different versions of the same woman — Louise and Helene. The small Norwegian island reflects Louise’s personality, while the grand yet mysterious facade of her residence in Denmark reflects the stature of Helene.
The Secret Woman Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘The Secret Woman’ took place in Norway and Denmark, particularly in Tysnes Municipality, Helsingør Municipality, and Copenhagen. As per reports, principal photography for the Danish film got underway in late May 2025 and concluded after nearly three months in August of the same year.
Tysnes Municipality, Norway
A major chunk of ‘The Secret Woman’ was lensed in the Tysnes municipality, situated in Norway’s Vestland County. The municipality’s administrative center, Uggdal, features in multiple scenes. Most prominently, it is where Louise Andersen’s idyllic life with Joachim is depicted. Specifically, the 3-star hotel Haaheim Gaard at Dalsvegen 182 in Uggdal, along with the surrounding areas, serves as a critical production location for the thriller. The cast and crew also traveled outside the municipality to film a few outdoor scenes at the Hardanger Bridge, which connects Ullensvang to Ulvik in Vestland County.
Helsingør Municipality, Denmark
To fill the visual canvas of ‘The Secret Woman,’ the filming unit also set up camp in Denmark’s Helsingør Municipality, located on the northeast coast of the island of Zealand. In particular, they took over the Gurrehus Castle in the town of Kvistgård and recorded multiple scenes depicting the lavish Söderberg family estate. The property features multiple bedrooms with high ceilings, a scenic castle garden, a functional kitchen-dining area, and additional amenities, several of which were utilized by the cast and crew during production.
Copenhagen, Denmark
The capital of Denmark, Copenhagen, also hosted the production of ‘The Secret Woman.’ The filming unit reportedly set up camp in and around the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) building at Sundkaj 165 in Copenhagen. The exterior of the 7-story Headquarters stood in for the Söderberg family’s successful shipping business. Located in Denmark’s Øresund Region, the city features in multiple movies and TV shows. Some of the notable titles include ‘Into the Deep,’ ‘Backstabbing for Beginners,’ ‘Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever,’ ‘Secrets We Keep,’ ‘The Chestnut Man,’ and ‘The Killing.’
