As they race against time to guess what’s inside the box, the participants must face off in a series of high-stakes challenges, such as fast-paced trivia rounds, that test their physical and mental abilities. Besides unlocking the prize, contestants must also navigate twists and turns, as well as shifting alliances, to retain their hard-earned prizes and emerge victorious in the end. Hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, the reality game show is a mix of competition and drama within the walls of a stage filled with numerous golden boxes containing unexpected prizes.
What’s in the Box? Filming Locations
‘What’s in the Box?’ is filmed in England, particularly in London. From what we can tell, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the game show seemingly took place between the months of July and August 2025. One of the contestants, Macy Marie, took to social media and shared a few words about her experience of being a part of the series, stating, “Huge love to our cheermazing coach @cheerdoc for tossing that application our way. Massive shoutout to our casting director Erik for backing us from day one. And seriously, hair & makeup, stage crew, producers, the whole brilliant team of creators and writers, you all turned this into the most stressful, chaotic, and ridiculously intense adventure I’ve ever been thrown into… and I weirdly loved every minute.”

Since ‘What’s in the Box?’ is driven by a format that’s set in a controlled indoor environment, it is taped in a film studio in London. To create the controlled setup for the reality show, the production team carefully settled for a production facility in the capital city of England, as well as the United Kingdom. In particular, filming took place on a dedicated sound stage in the filming complex, which provided the crew members with an ideal canvas to paint the scintillating visual aesthetic for the Netflix project. The production of game shows like this one is typically carried out in an enclosed space, as it provides consistency in terms of lighting and sound for elaborate set pieces, such as giant boxes, flashing scoreboards, platforms, and other props.
Shooting on a soundstage also prevents disruptions related to traffic, weather and the hustle and bustle of the streets, thus keeping the schedule on track. Moreover, the post-production facilities supplied by the fully-equipped studios further enhance the efficiency and ease of the process. London is home to several state-of-the-art production studios. Therefore, it is a logical choice made by the members of the production department to minimize disruptions and maximize quality and workflow. Over the years, the city has served as a shooting site for many game/competition shows such as ‘Taskmaster,’ ‘Strictly Come Dancing,’ ‘Whose Line Is It Anyway?,’ ‘Britain’s Got Talent,’ ‘Gamesmaster,’ ‘Celebrity Squares,’ ‘America’s Next Top Model,’ and ‘Pointless.’
