Directed by Chava Cartas, Netflix’s ‘Our Times’ (‘Nuestros Tiempos’) is a Mexican sci-fi drama film that deals with time travel and its “little” issues. The story revolves around a married couple, Nora and Héctor, college professors in Mexico City, who figure out a way to travel across time using a wormhole. Putting their scientific skills to groundbreaking use, they successfully travel from 1966 to 2025 while ensuring that they can return. Nora is taken aback by how successful women are in 2025, especially when compared to 1966, and feels like she has finally found her place. However, this is not the case for Héctor, who seems to be lost in the new version of the world. As the two people navigate 2025, one thrives and the other suffers, all while figuring out the cost of their endeavor. Since the story involves time travel, care has been taken to incorporate visuals that make distinguishing the two eras easy.
Our Times Filming Locations
‘Our Times’ was reportedly filmed entirely in Mexico, specifically in Mexico City, the country’s capital. Principal photography seemingly took place between April and May of 2024. Over the course of filming, the cast and crew became a family and had a blast both on set and off set. Director Chava Cartas took to social media to express his gratitude for his experience filming the movie, stating, “a good scene and a good Crew! That’s what filming movies is all about!!!
Mexico City, Mexico
‘Our Times’ was almost entirely filmed in Mexico City and possibly in the city’s surrounding areas. The city is considered an Alpha world city due to its reputation as one of the world’s financial capitals. The School of Architecture at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (National Autonomous University of Mexico), located at Circuito Escolar in Coyoacán, became a primary base for several scenes since it doubles for the college where Nora and Héctor teach. It is one of Mexico’s leading architecture schools and offers a mix of urban and Mexican elements that help showcase the culture.
Many outdoor sequences were seemingly filmed in areas near the university. The crew may have also resorted to studio space for capturing indoor scenes featuring time travel equipment or to show the time travel itself. Mexico City is home to many modern studios with state-of-the-art equipment that provide a creative space at times not otherwise available. Other films and shows filmed on location include ‘Blade Runner 2049,’ ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Infinite,’ and ‘Sense8.’
If you want to enjoy the city as a tourist, some of the landmarks you can visit are the Angel of Independence, Museo Soumaya, the Monument to the Revolution, the Palace of Fine Arts, and the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. For those who want to relish the culture, the city hosts the Día de Muertos, AKA Day of the Dead, Festival de México en el Centro Histórico, a celebration of the city’s rich history, Marcha del Orgullo, the city’s LGBTQ Pride march, and Feria Nacional del Mole, which celebrates mole, the traditional food of San Pedro Atocpan.
