Where is Outlander Blood of My Blood Filmed?

A prequel to ‘Outlander’ and adapted from the books written by Diana Gabaldon, Starz’s ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ is a period romantic drama series developed by Matthew B. Roberts. It follows various aspects of the lives of Jamie Fraser’s parents, Brian Fraser and Ellen Mackenzie. Moreover, the narrative explores the lives of Claire Beauchamp’s parents, Henry Beauchamp and Julia Moriston, as well. Apart from focusing on how Brian and Ellen fell in love in 18th-century Scotland, the show also puts a spotlight on the origin of Henry and Julia’s love story that began during World War I in England. Given the time travel element in the narrative, the visuals and backdrops play a crucial role in keeping the narrative seem authentic.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood Filming Locations

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ is filmed primarily in Scotland, particularly in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perthshire, and Luss. According to reports, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the spin-off series got underway in January 2024 but was hindered due to storms and unfavorable weather conditions. After some delay, the shooting resumed in February 2024 and continued for about five months before wrapping up in July of the same year. Talking about his experience on set, Jeremy Irvine, who portrays Henry Beauchamp, told Elle, “We became actual mates before we had to become colleagues. We spent a few months up here getting ready for the role and doing what production called ‘boot camp,’ learning all the things that we need to learn for the roles. In that time, we all became very close.”

Glasgow, Scotland

‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ was filmed in the city of Glasgow in Scotland. In particular, several shots were lensed at South Street, Balmoral Street, and Park Street South. Another one of the places where filming took place is Park Gate in Dumfries and Galloway. The production team also set up camp in and around Park Circus, Park Terrace, and Park Gardens. Furthermore, a few pivotal sequences were also recorded in Woodlands Terrace. Apart from being a favorable tourist destination, Glasgow also attracts the attention of filmmakers across the globe. Some of the movies and shows that made use of the beautiful locales of the city include ‘Outlander,’ ‘The Buccaneers,’ ‘Then Came You,’ ‘Not Another Happy Ending,’ ‘Dear Frankie,’ ‘My Name Is Joe,’ ‘Perfect Strangers,’ and ‘Perfect Sense.’

Edinburgh, Scotland

A portion of the Starz production was also taped in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, also dubbed the Athens of the North. The cast and crew visited Midhope Castle, a 16th-century tower house within the Hopetoun estate in the hamlet of Abercorn, located 4-5 km west of South Queensferry, just outside Edinburgh. In the show, the Category A-listed building doubles up as Jamie Fraser’s home in Scotland — Lallybroch, also known as Broch Tuarach. The historic structure is also a regular presence in the original, ‘Outlander.’

Located in the southeastern part of the country, the hilly city is recognized for its breathtaking architecture, embellished with cobbled streets, rich history, dynamic art and cultural landscape, as well as iconic attractions such as the majestic Edinburgh Castle, The Royal Mile, and the world-renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Over the years, the city has been utilized as a filming site for movies and shows like ‘The Da Vinci Code,’ ‘Good Omens,’ ‘The Lost King,’ ‘Outlaw King,’ ‘North & South,’ ‘Mary Queen of Scots,’ ‘Belgravia,’ ‘The Railway Man,’ ‘The 12th Man,’ ‘Daniel Deronda,’ ‘One Day,’ and ‘Arn: The Kingdom at the End of the Road.’

Other Locations in Scotland

For the purpose of filming, the production team also settled on Luss within the Argyll and Bute region. Nestled on the western shore of Loch Lomond, the stone cottages, quiet lanes, lush greenery, and tranquil waterfront views offer an idyllic, old-world charm, thus proving the picturesque village to be an ideal setting for a romantic saga like ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood.’ It has also served as a filming site for ‘Take the High Road’ and ‘Falling for Figaro.’ Aside from Luss, a few scenes were also shot at Doune Castle, a 14th-century castle at Castle Hill in the village of Doune, located in the Stirling region in the central part of Scotland. It stands in for Castle Leoch, the Seat of Clan Mackenzie, in the Starz show. The castle has become a popular tourist attraction, mostly thanks to its role as a backdrop for ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age,’ as well as ‘Outlander.’
