A spin-off of CBS’ ‘The Neighborhood,’ Paramount+’s ‘Crutch’ is a sitcom created by Owen H.M. Smith. The narrative revolves around a beloved Harlem-based flooring store owner named Francois “Frank” Crutchfield, who is also known as “Crutch.” Although time has passed after the untimely and sudden demise of his wife, he is still in the process of grieving. Since his son and daughter live away from home, the shop owner makes a few empty-nest plans.

However, his plans and life are upended when his millennial son, Jake, free-spirited daughter, Jamilah, and grandkids suddenly move back in with Crutch in his apartment. Having trouble navigating new family dynamics, sooner rather than later, he realizes that being close to his family is all he needs to heal. The comedy series is set in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan, where he juggles between his flooring store and his personal life with his kids and grandkids.

New York City, New York

All the pivotal sequences for ‘Crutch’ were lensed in New York City, situated at the southern tip of New York State. The production team set up camp in the Kaufman Astoria Studios at 34-12 36th Street in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens. They took over one of the sound stages and redressed it as the Harlem apartment of Crutch, filming the show in front of a live audience. From what we can tell, the scenes involving the protagonist’s flooring store were also taped in a sound stage. The Kaufman Astoria Studios consists of a total of 11 sound stages and multiple offices for on-site as well as off-site productions, making it an ideal production location for all kinds of projects.

Since the story unfolds in the Harlem neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, it is likely that the filming unit also taped several establishing shots on location. Thus, you might spot a few popular landmarks and places of interest in the backdrop, such as the Abyssinian Baptist Church, St Martin’s Episcopal Church, the Hotel Theresa, and the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building. Apart from ‘Crutch,’ the Big Apple has hosted the production of various movies and TV shows over the years, including ‘Caught Stealing,’ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ ‘Green Book,’ ‘The Chair Company,’ The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,’ and ‘ Orange Is the New Black.’
