With André Øvredal at the helm, ‘Passenger’ is a supernatural horror thriller movie that revolves around a young couple — Tyler and Maddie — who have been living out of their van for a few weeks. Their exciting van life adventure takes an unexpected turn when the pair witnesses a gruesome highway accident that results in the death of the driver involved. Horrified by the entire incident, Tyler and Maddie try to move on and continue their journey when they notice signs of a demonic presence.
Not long after, the couple realizes that they are being stalked by a demon called the Passenger from the scene of the accident. Now, they must try to outrun the stalker who won’t stop following them until it hunts them down. The psychological horror film features a talented ensemble cast comprising Lou Llobell, Jacob Scipio, Melissa Leo, Joseph Lopez, and more. Its visual canvas is filled with dark visuals of the haunting roads as Tyler and Maddie are stalked by a supernatural element.
Passenger Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘Passenger’ took place in various counties across Washington State, including King County, Chelan County, Douglas County, Grays Harbor County, Kittitas County, and Grant County. From what we can tell, principal photography for the horror film got underway in February 2025 and wrapped up after more than 34 shooting days in late March of the same year. Amy Lillard, executive director of Washington Filmworks and state film commissioner, told The News Tribune, “Filming in Washington would not have happened without state incentives…A combination of stunning rural locations, competitive incentives, and our world-class local crew is why Washington was selected.”
King County, Washington
For the purpose of shooting, the production team of ‘Passenger’ set up camp in Washington’s King County. Its county seat, Seattle, served as a prominent filming destination, with its landmarks and buildings, such as the Space Needle, Climate Pledge Arena, the Amazon Spheres, and the Seattle Great Wheel, seemingly making an appearance in the backdrop of a few scenes. In February 2025, a few portions involving Tyler and Maddie’s van were taped in and around the Enumclaw Expo Center at 45224 284th Avenue Southeast in the city of Enumclaw.
Chelan County, Washington
Chelan County also reportedly hosted the production of the André Øvredal directorial. In particular, a significant chunk of the film was lensed in the county seat, Wenatchee, a city situated at the confluence of the Columbia and Wenatchee rivers. During a conversation with SciFiNow, the director André Øvredal elaborated on the creepy happenings that the cast and crew experienced on set. He revealed, “We also had this great story where we found a dog along one of the roads, who hadn’t eaten for a long time. So that became part of our crew. It had no owner. It was just there and would have died, I think, a day or two later, and the whole production took care of this dog until we ended, and actually, it ended up becoming one of the crew members’ dogs. That was my favorite story from the shoot, actually.”
Other Locations in Washington
Several pivotal sequences for ‘Passenger’ were also shot in other locations across Washington, including Douglas County, Grays Harbor County, and Kittitas. As per reports, some RV-related scenes were also taped in and around the city of Grand Coulee, located in Grant County, in March 2025. In the aforementioned interview, the filmmaker added that “85% of this movie was shot in darkness, out on the road, live, in rain, in the middle of winter, it was cold, it was raining, and equipment, gear, everything was suffering because the cameras would suddenly not work and we would be constantly at odds with the environment.”
However, all the challenges that the cast and crew endured added a sense of realism and reality to the entire shoot. He stated, “I really did not want any green screens. I didn’t want to shoot anything in the studio. I didn’t want to shoot the car stuff with an LED screen. I want to shoot everything out on the road. And we did, and I felt good about doing it the real classic, old-fashioned filmmaking way.”
