Adapted from the 1987 novel titled ‘Double Whammy’ written by Carl Hiaasen, ‘RJ Decker’ is an action crime drama series created by Rob Doherty (known for ‘Elementary’). The narrative centers on a former inmate and newspaper photographer named RJ Decker, who moves to South Florida and starts anew as a private investigator. As he comes across all kinds of strange cases, he enlists the help of three women to solve them and earn a name for himself.
One is his journalistic ex, and the other is his police detective wife. The third is a mysterious woman from his past who could help him achieve his ambitions or send him back behind bars. Featuring compelling performances from Scott Speedman, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Bevin Bru, Kevin Rankin, and Adelaide Clemens, the tale of crime and justice unfolds in the colorful, sunny, and crime-filled streets of South Florida, which serves as the ideal backdrop for the detective show.
RJ Decker Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘RJ Decker’ is conducted primarily in North Carolina, particularly in New Hanover County. However, some portions are also shot in the state of Florida, especially Miami metropolitan area. The pilot was reportedly filmed over a few weeks between July and August 2025. After the show was picked up by ABC, principal photography on the remaining episodes of the inaugural iteration got underway in November 2025.
New Hanover County, North Carolina
Although the primary setting of ‘RJ Decker’ is South Florida, a major chunk of he crime series was lensed in New Hanover County, North Carolina. The production team set up camp in different parts of the county, including the city of Wilmington. To be specific, the cast and crew members were spotted taping pivotal sequences inside and outside the Suites On Market at 2828 Market Street. As per reports, several houses on Shirley Road and Churchill Drive also served as production locations for the Rob Doherty creation. Various other businesses of Wilmington feature in the series, including Ly Nails at 5225 Sigmon Rd #150, C C Grissom & Sons Inc. at 1802 Castle Street, Julia’s Florist at 900 South Kerr Avenue, and the White Front Breakfast House at 1518 Market Street.
Within the city of Wilmington, the filming unit also took over the New Hanover County Courthouse at 316 Princess Street, the Brooklyn Arts Center at 516 North 4th Street, Lake Forest Baptist Church at 1626 Lake Branch Drive, and the Alton Lennon Federal Building at 2 Princess Street. Scott Speedman and the rest of the cast members also recorded various key portions in the beach town of Carolina Beach. The areas around SeaWitch Cafe & Tiki Bar at 227 Carolina Beach Avenue North and Nest Realty at 1000 North Lake Park Boulevard, Suite #131, were seemingly utilized to shoot important scenes. It seems that a few pivotal scenes were also lensed at the Fort Fisher State Historic Site at 1610 Fort Fisher Boulevard South in the town of Kure Beach.
Miami Metropolitan Area, Florida
As per reports, the cast and crew members also traveled to the Miami metropolitan area for the purpose of shooting ‘RJ Decker.’ In the city of Miami Beach, they set up camp in and around a beach to shoot multiple outdoor scenes. In the month of January 2026, they were spotted taping numerous pivotal sequences across the city of West Palm Beach. For instance, the Palm Beach County Courthouse at 205 North Dixie Highway and the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum at 300 North Dixie Highway served as two key filming sites for the series.
Furthermore, the production team set up camp in and around the property at 218 Pershing Way in West Palm Beach to lens important scenes. They also utilized the streets and neighborhoods of the coastal city of Fort Lauderdale, which is situated 30 miles north of Miami. In order to shoot several exterior scenes, the filming unit took over the Las Olas Boulevard, where they reportedly shot a driving scene in February 2026. In addition, Las Olas Oceanside Park at 3000 East Las Olas Boulevard and State Road A1A also feature in various scenes.
