Created by Tyler Perry, Netflix’s ‘She the People’ is a political comedy drama series that takes the humorous route to exploring the life of newly-elected Lieutenant Governor, Antoinette Dunkerson. She has fought hard and performed her duties to the best of her abilities, all of which have finally resulted in her victory. However, after she takes the oath as Mississippi’s first Black lieutenant governor, she realizes that there’s a lot she needs to keep in check, especially her eccentric family, which is now in the public eye, and a sexist and condescending governor. While the narrative is purely character-driven, the compelling visuals successfully establish the political setting that is prevalent throughout the show.
She the People Filming Locations
‘She the People’ is filmed in Mississippi and Atlanta. Principal photography reportedly commenced around June 2024 and seemingly wrapped up in October of the same year. Since the story is set in Mississippi, it became the base for the series, while the crew resorted to Georgia to film additional scenes, together with several indoor scenes. Perry has used Mississippi in other projects and is aware of what the city has to offer. On the other hand, Georgia is where his office and studio are.
Jackson, Mississippi
Jackson, located in Hinds County, is the capital city of the Southeastern state of Mississippi, and is the primary production location for ‘She the People.’ Many outdoor scenes, along with several indoor scenes, were filmed here, especially those showcasing the lieutenant governor’s mansion, where Antoinette and her family move in. The crew seemingly used a gorgeous property to double for it. The city’s role in the country’s history of slavery and the Civil War, including the Battle of Jackson, makes it an apt setting to tell the story of a Black person rightfully claiming power. The sub-tropical climate highlights the contrast the city offers with its blend of natural environments and urban structures.
The crew used wide shots and establishing shots of the Mississippi State Capitol building at 400 High Street to show Antoinette’s office. A towering example of Beaux Arts classicism, the building has been declared a National Historic Landmark and offers free guided tours by staff and volunteers. It also provides educational activities for student groups, like drawing, word games, quizzes, and more. Other famous landmarks in Jackson are Medgar and Myrlie Evers Home National Monument, Jackson Zoo, Eudora Welty House, and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, some of which might be spotted in the backdrops of a few scenes.
Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta, the capital city of Georgia and its county seat, was used to film the indoor scenes for ‘She the People.’ To be specific, the stages of Tyler Perry Studios, located at 315 Deshler Street, were turned into film sets. The studio boasts a replica of the White House, which might have doubled for the interiors of the Mississippi State Capitol. Scenes inside Antoinette’s mansion were also seemingly shot in one or more of the stages. Considered one of the largest production facilities in the nation, the film studio has a 330-acre lot, twelve purpose-built sound stages, and state-of-the-art production equipment. Ready-made sets at the studio include the White House, Oval Office, a prison yard, a hospital, a chapel, an airport terminal, a police station, and more. Some other movies and shows that have utilized Tyler Perry Studios for production are ‘Duplicity,’ ‘Beauty in Black,’ ‘All the Queen’s Men,’ ‘Sistas,’ and ‘The Oval.’
