Created by Molly Smith Metzler, Netflix’s ‘Sirens’ is a black comedy miniseries that serves as a powerful commentary on power and class from the perspective of women. Based on Metzler’s play ‘Elemeno Pea,’ the story is set over the course of a Labor Day weekend at a lavish beach estate. It follows a young woman named Devon who arrives at the estate and finds her estranged sister Simone’s glorified attitude towards her boss, Michaela Kell, very strange.
Michaela is clearly addicted to a luxurious lifestyle, and her control over those working at the estate is absolute. Sensing her nefarious intentions, Devon pulls the required strings to get Simone out of Michaela’s spell immediately. Since the estate and its surroundings are a significant part of the narrative, the show emphasizes this point using visuals and backdrops that are at times attractive and at times eerie.
Sirens Filming Locations
‘Sirens’ was filmed entirely in the state of New York. Principal photography reportedly began in July 2024 and continued for almost three months before wrapping up in October of the same year. While most of the show was shot practically outdoors, some CGI was used to enhance or extend the settings of various scenes. The crew successfully enhanced the visuals of the narrative with the gorgeous indoor and outdoor settings.
Suffolk County, New York
In Suffolk County, the easternmost county of New York State, the crew resorted to the Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve to film a major portion of ‘Sirens.’ Located at 25 Lloyd Harbor Road in the village of Lloyd Harbor in Huntington, the estate, with its 1,750-acre grounds, comprising the Henry Lloyd Manor and the 1930s Summer Cottage, serves as the perfect backdrop for the show’s elite and higher-class aesthetic. The crew also built a small set near the bath house to film additional scenes. The harbor itself was used to capture outdoor scenes and establishing shots. The charm of the East Coast and Long Island’s lush shoreline further provide the show with a bright, high-contrast visual canvas. Famous movies shot in Long Island include ‘The Instigators,’ ‘No Hard Feelings,’ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ and ‘The Avengers.’ Some of the most well-known tourist spots in Long Island are Coopers Beach, Main Beach, Heckscher Museum of Art, Old Westbury Gardens, and Oheka Castle.
The production team also used Cutchogue, a hamlet in the town of Southold, located on the North Fork peninsula in northeast Suffolk, to film several indoor and outdoor scenes. Netflix made two deals with Southold, which involved three weeks of production. Scenes were captured at an undisclosed private property on Oregon Road. To make the production process quicker, a logistics area was set up at the Southold Town recreation center, located at 970 Peconic Lane. North Fork has been the site of several film and television productions, like ‘Orange is the New Black,’ ‘Girls,’ ‘Lost Girls,’ and ‘ Luckiest Girl Alive.’
Nassau County, New York
A few additional scenes were also seemingly taped at the village of Sands Point, in the Town of North Hempstead, in Nassau County. The crew might have opted for the location due to the old-world charm that can easily be spotted in its buildings and natural landscapes. Lying on the North Shore of Long Island, the village was incorporated in 1910 and is primarily residential. It is home to the famous Hempstead House, which has served as the backdrop for movies like ‘Malcolm X’ and ‘Scent of a Woman.’
Buffalo, New York
Buffalo, the seat of Erie County in New York State, was seemingly used to capture a few outdoor scenes, including the area around the Buffalo Police B-District building at 695 Main Street. The city is reputed for its major-league sports teams, the NFL’s Buffalo Bills and the National Hockey League’s Buffalo Sabres, its Buffalo chicken wings, AKA Buffalo wings, and the National Buffalo Wing Festival. Some popular places you can visit in the city are Albright–Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo History Museum, Canalside, Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park, and the Freedom Wall.
Brooklyn, New York
In Brooklyn, the famous New York City borough, the crew resorted to the Steiner Studios at 15 Washington Avenue in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They used it to capture select interior scenes requiring a custom space to let the camera move freely as per the narrative’s requirement. The studio boasts 30 sound stages of varying sizes covering 780,000 square feet and a 50-acre private enclave. It is considered New York’s first Hollywood-level production facility with state-of-the-art amenities and equipment. Popular films shot at Steiner Studios include ‘Tick, Tick… Boom!,’ ‘Joker,’ ‘The Post,’ Bridge of Spies,’ ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ and Trainwreck.’
