The Emily Kapnek creation, ‘Suburgatory,’ is adapted from ‘Suburgatory: Twisted Tales from Darkest Suburbia’ written by Linda Keenan. The sitcom revolves around a single father named George Altman and his teenage daughter, Tessa Altman, with whom he lives in a New York City apartment. The architect, whose wife divorced him when Tessa was an infant, is shocked when he finds a box of condoms in his daughter’s bedroom. Confused about what he should do about the situation, George decides to relocate to a house in a bucolic suburb with Tessa.
Initially, the teenager goes through a cultural shock as something feels strange about their new neighborhood in Chatswin. The Altmans realize that their lifestyle is different than the upper-middle-class lifestyles of everyone around them, making it difficult for them to fit in. Now, the father and daughter must navigate the area’s politics. Featuring Jeremy Sisto, Jane Levy, Carly Chaikin, Allie Grant, Alan Tudyk, and Cheryl Hines, the hilarious tale unfolds in the fictional town of Chatswin, which serves as an additional character that challenges the Altmans while also bringing them closer together.
Suburgatory Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘Suburgatory’ was conducted primarily in California, specifically in Los Angeles County. From what we can tell, principal photography for the debut season of the comedy series seemingly took place sometime in 2010. As for the sophomore round, its shooting supposedly took place in late 2011 or early 2012. The third season was possibly shot sometime in 2013.
Los Angeles County, California
Almost the entirety of ‘Suburgatory’ was lensed across Los Angeles County, situated in Southern California. The production team set up camp in Warner Bros. Studios at 4000 Warner Boulevard in the city of Burbank. They made the most of the facilities and sound stages in the film studio to bring the comedic narrative to life. The indoor scenes involving the Altman’s new suburban residence in Chatswin were taped on a sound stage. In order to shoot many exterior shots of the neighborhood George and Tessa Altman live in, the cast and crew members took over the area around the property at 10501 Kling Street in the neighborhood of Toluca Lake in the city of Los Angeles.
It is likely that the filming unit also recorded a few outdoor scenes on the backlot area of the Warner Bros. Studios. Home to 29 sound stages, the film studio also offers ample production office space and a wide range of exterior sets, such as French Street, New York Street, Warner Village, Jungle Lagoon, and Commissary Park. Apart from ‘Suburgatory,’ Warner Bros. Studios has served as a production location for numerous movies and TV shows, such as ‘La La Land,’ ‘The Goonies,’ ‘Something’s Gotta Give,’ ‘The Sex Lives of College Girls,’ ‘The Big Bang Theory,’ ‘Abbott Elementary,’ and ‘What I Like About You.’
