Adapted from the Swedish TV show titled ‘Expedition Robinson,’ CBS’ ‘Survivor 48’ is a survival reality competition series created by Charlie Parsons. It follows a group of people from different walks of life who are placed together in a secluded location, most likely on an island. During their time together, they must not only provide food and shelter for themselves but also take part in various challenges that test their physical as well as mental capabilities.
While physical challenges include running and swimming with certain twists, a few mental games involve solving puzzles. Depending on the performances, contestants are either eliminated or rewarded. When only two or three contestants remain, the eliminated contestants are asked to vote for the winner, who would earn the title of “Sole Survivor” and the grand cash prize of $1,000,000. For the 48th installment of ‘Survivor,’ a similar format is followed, but with a new batch of contestants going head to head against each other for the win.
Survivor Season 48 Filming Locations
Following the pattern of several of the previous installments, the production of ‘Survivor 48’ was also carried out on the Mamanuca Islands of Fiji. According to reports, the principal photography for the 48th season of the reality series took place over the course of several weeks in the summer of 2024, from late June to July of the same year. Officially known as the Republic of Fiji, the island country is filled with lush green pastures and wilderness that makes Fiji a suitable shooting site for a show like ‘Survivor.’
Mamanuca Islands, Fiji
All the pivotal sequences for ‘Survivor 48’ were reportedly lensed on the Mamanuca Islands, making it the production location for the 16th consecutive season of the long-running show. The volcanic archipelago consists of a total of 20 islands, which are visible in the backdrop throughout the season as the survivors participate in different kinds of mental and physical challenges by the shore. During the production, the international crew consisted of approximately 400 people, while roughly 400 local Fijians also closely worked with the rest of the crew. In order to set up all the challenges for the season, the crew members arrived on the Mamanuca Islands several months in advance and turned the resort into a production village.
Instead of transferring anything from abroad, they produced everything required to construct the sets in Fiji itself, be it materials or props. The pristine waters, gorgeous beaches, and live coral reefs make the islands a visual spectacle, which adds a hint of tranquility to the show, which otherwise is filled with nail-biting and tense situations. What makes the islands ideal for a show like ‘Survivor’ is the fact that the archipelago includes different kinds of activities, such as windsurfing, swimming, sailing, snorkeling, swimming with reef sharks, kayaking, and more.
