Where is The ‘Burbs Filmed? All Shooting Locations

Adapted from the eponymous 1989 movie directed by Joe Dante, Peacock’s ‘The ‘Burbs’ is a mystery comedy series created by Celeste Hughey. The narrative centers on a young couple — Rob and Samira Fisher — who relocate to the former’s childhood home in the quiet, peaceful suburb of Hinkley Hills. As they have recently entered parenthood, the couple hopes to start afresh and provide a safe life for their child in what’s considered the safest town in the nation. Not long after, the Fisher family smells trouble when someone mysterious moves into an abandoned property across the street.

As Samira begins to learn about the cul-de-sac’s history and notices suspicious behavior among some locals, she fears the neighborhood’s quaintness is just a facade that hides something sinister. Trouble follows her into her home when she joins forces with a few neighbors and digs deep to uncover the town’s darkest secrets. Featuring compelling and hilarious performances from Keke Palmer, Jack Whitehall, Paula Pell, Julia Duffy, and Kapil Talwalkar, the mysterious tale unfolds in the fictional suburb of Hinkley Hills, which serves as an ever-present character driving the narrative forward.

The ‘Burbs Filming Locations

The shooting for ‘The ‘Burbs’ takes place entirely in California, particularly in Universal City. From what we can tell, principal photography for the inaugural iteration of the whodunnit series got underway around March 2025 and went on for about three months before wrapping up by the end of June of the same year. One of the costume designers, Trayce Gigi Field, took to social media after the conclusion of the shooting process of season 1. She stated, “That’s a wrap on THE BURBS! Thank you to the awesome costume team!! Being surrounded by such awesome humans makes the job so much better!! Thank you to each of you for being you!”

Universal City, California

Like the original film on which the Peacock show is based, the production team of ‘The ‘Burbs’ utilized several locales, amenities, and talent of the unincorporated area of Universal City, which is surrounded by the city of Los Angeles. Situated within the San Fernando Valley, the region is known for being home to the Universal Studios Lot at 100 Universal City Plaza. As in the 1989 film, the cast and crew members also set up camp primarily on the backlot of the film studio.

Thanks to the vastness and versatility of Universal Studios Lot’s backlot, the filming unit was able to create the fictitious town of Hinkley Hills using various alleys and streets. To be specific, the Colonial Street set doubled as the cul-de-sac where Rob moves into with his wife, Samira Fisher. The set consists of about 15 houses, some of which can be spotted in the backdrop of several outdoor sequences. It is also likely that a few indoor portions were lensed inside those houses. The controlled environment of the studio allowed the makers to adjust the visual settings and camera movements without any restrictions.

The Universal Studios Lot also consists of more than 30 sound stages of different sizes, dressing rooms, rehearsal halls, production offices, and more, all of which make it an ideal filming destination for all kinds of projects. Apart from ‘The ‘Burbs,’ the film studio has served as a prominent production location for many movies and TV shows, including ‘Big Fat Liar,’ ‘Hairspray Live!,’ ‘A Polish Vampire in Burbank,’ and ‘The Orville.’
