With Surapong Ploensang in the director’s chair, Netflix’s ‘The Debt Collector’ is a Thai action-crime thriller that centers on Num, a former relentless debt collector fresh out of prison. Tormented by his guilt over his former way of life, he is looking to turn a new leaf by focusing on what truly matters while battling against a terminal illness. With limited time in his hand, Num finds himself entangled in the violent underworld yet again, but this time, he embarks on a mission to avenge the victims of loan sharks and seek redemption. Originally titled ‘Khon Dueat Thuang Khaen,’ it is inspired by true events related to loan sharks, illegal lending, and the violence linked to debt collection. The enthralling tale unfolds across a variety of locations as Num’s adventurous journey takes him from bustling streets to secluded areas.
The Debt Collector Filming Locations
‘The Debt Collector’ was filmed in Thailand, seemingly in and around Bangkok. From what we can tell, principal photography for the Netflix production took place over the course of a couple of months, sometime around the spring of 2025. Nadech Kugimiya, who portrays Num, took to social media to express gratitude to everyone involved in the project for their tireless contributions. He stated, “Thanks to the entire team at @jungka.studio and @netflixth for supporting me and understanding the way I wanted to approach this project. I wanted to stay completely isolated from everyone, no talking, no socializing so I could fully focus on the role.” From what we can tell, the cast and crew had a great time bringing the project to life.
Bangkok, Thailand
Most of the pivotal sequences for ‘The Debt Collector’ were seemingly lensed in and around Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. The filming unit took over various streets and neighborhoods across the city and transformed them into film sets to shoot key scenes. They also seemingly set up camp inside real-life residential properties and businesses, where they supposedly taped sequences that take place indoors. In the establishing or exterior shots, you are likely to spot popular landmarks and buildings, including the Grand Palace, the Giant Swing, the Democracy Monument, Wat Paknam Bhasicharoen, and Victory Monument.
To depict the role of Num, Nadech underwent a significant physical transformation through sheer hard work and determination. The makeup department further enhanced his appearance with carefully crafted scars, intricate tattoos, and weathered skin to realistically reflect his character’s rugged past and the hardships he continues to endure. Besides ‘The Debt Collector,’ Bangkok has served as a production location for numerous film and TV projects, such as ‘The Furious,’ ‘The Creator,’ ‘The Beach,’ ‘Only God Forgives,’ ‘Tomorrow Never Dies,’ ‘The Serpent,’ and ‘Girl from Nowhere.’
