The Debora Cahn creation, Netflix’s ‘The Diplomat,’ is a political thriller drama series that revolves around Kate Wyler and her duties as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom amidst an intense international crisis. The third season picks up right after President Rayburn dies by the end of the sophomore round. When Kate, Hal, and Grace Penn receive the news of the President’s demise, Grace automatically assumes the position of the new commander in chief.
Upon finding out that President Rayburn was on the phone call with Hal when he passed away, she wants to know what the two talked about in the President’s last moments. As old secrets are likely to spill out, Grace’s secret of hatching a plan to attack the British warship also has a chance of coming to light. Despite the familiar settings of the presidential office and government buildings, season 3 of ‘The Diplomat’ manages to breathe new life into the locations as new dramatic twists and turns come to life.
The Diplomat Season 3 Filming Locations
The shooting for ‘The Diplomat’ season 3 took place in England and New York, particularly in London and New York City. A few portions were also seemingly shot in other locations across the United Kingdom, including Scotland. From what we can tell, principal photography for the third round got underway around July 2024 and continued for several months before supposedly wrapping up in January 2025.
London, England
A significant chunk of ‘The Diplomat’ season 3 was lensed across the capital of England and the United Kingdom — London — and its surrounding areas. In order to establish the authentic feel of government and stately properties, the exteriors of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich borough were reportedly utilized. As for the scenes involving the ambassador’s residence, the cast and crew members set up camp in and around Wrotham Park in the town of Potters Bar near the London Borough of Barnet.
Several exterior scenes for the third season of the political series were also recorded at Carlton Gardens, Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster in Central London, Parliament Square, and areas around Winfield House and Regent’s Park. St. Paul’s Cathedral, located in St. Paul’s Churchyard, also hosted the production of various important scenes. The exteriors of the U.S. Embassy London at 33 Nine Elms Lane in the district of Nine Elms also doubled for the exterior of a government building in season 3.
New York City, New York
The third installment of ‘The Diplomat’ was also recorded in New York City and the surrounding areas in the eponymous state. The cast and crew visited Coe Hall Historic House Museum, located in the over 400-acre Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park in Oyster Bay on Long Island, for the purpose of filming season 3 of the thriller series. In addition, the team settled on a full-service studio facility in Brooklyn to tape a few sequences. In particular, shooting took place at Steiner Studios at 15 Washington Avenue in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Spanning about 50 acres with 30 soundstages, the aforementioned studio is touted as the largest studio complex in the country after Hollywood. Over the years, the production facility has hosted the filming of several movies and television shows of varying genres and scale. Some of the popular titles that utilized the first-rate services of the studio are ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ ‘Burn After Reading,’ ‘Damages,’ ‘The Post,’ and ‘Inside Man.’
Other Locations in the United Kingdom
For the purpose of shooting, the production team of ‘The Diplomat’ season 3 returned to a few familiar locations across the United Kingdom. For instance, certain rural and airport scenes were seemingly shot in and around the Cotswold Airport, which is situated near the village of Kemble in Gloucestershire. In order to shoot several indoor and outdoor portions, the cast and crew members also set up camp in and around Ditchley Park in the village of Enstone. Furthermore, Ardkinglas House on the Ardkinglas Estate in Argyll, Scotland, also possibly served as a filming site for the third season. The locales of the town of Inveraray also seemingly feature in the backdrop of various scenes set in locations outside of London.
