Created by Tina Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield, Netflix’s ‘The Four Seasons’ is a comedy miniseries revolving around six friends on a relaxing getaway, one of their traditional seasonal vacations. What’s supposed to be a fun outing takes a morose turn after a couple in the group reveals that they are going to break up. The show is an adaptation of the eponymous 1981 romantic comedy movie, which also delves into the ups and downs in relationships. Since the vacations are an intrinsic part of the narrative, the visuals play a significant role in emphasizing them while using them to highlight the aesthetic.
The Four Seasons Filming Locations
The filming of ‘The Four Seasons’ took place in New York State, California, and Puerto Rico. Principal photography began in September 2024 and lasted for around three and a half months before wrapping up by the end of December the same year. New York was the primary location for the production, while the crew used California and Puerto Rico for additional scenes. “It was a great idea when we were coming up with it. And then when we were like, ‘Oh wait, how do we actually produce it?’ It seemed a lot more complicated. But it all worked because we had a really talented crew,” series co-creator Tracey Wigfield told Awards Radar.
Dutchess County, New York
The production team shot all but one season (summer) in the narrative in the various counties of the Hudson Valley region that stretches from the Capital District to Yonkers in Westchester County. Numerous villages, towns, and cities across multiple counties that fall under the region were used for capturing various portions of the story involving meetings and interactions among characters, as well as establishing shots. In Dutchess County, the cities of Poughkeepsie and Beacon became the backdrops for many scenes. In Poughkeepsie, the crew filmed a handful of outdoor scenes in the suburb of Arlington.
The crew also accessed the campus of Vassar College, located at 24 Raymond Avenue in Poughkeepsie, to lens some scenes. In Beacon, Main Street and Churchill Street became the settings for a few outdoor scenes. Besides them, the town of Fishkill, located in the southwestern part of Dutchess County, and the nearby town of East Fishkill were also captured for several shots. The production team lensed some scenes at the Hopewell Junction, a hamlet in East Fishkill, as well.
Putnam County, New York
In Putnam County, located in the lower Hudson Valley region, the crew resorted to Putnam Valley to record many scenes. Situated in the southwestern part of the county, it is well-known for its lakes, including Lake Peekskill, Oscawana Lake, Dennytown Lake, and Roaring Brook Lake, and is nicknamed “Town of Lakes.” Besides Putnam Valley, many outdoor scenes were filmed in Kent, located in the north-central part of the county, and the western town of Philipstown, specifically Cold Spring village, a proper weekend getaway for New York City residents. The Glynwood Farm, located at 362 Glynwood Road, likely doubled for the location of the Lucy Flucker Knox Inn in the show. It is run by the Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming, an agricultural NGO promoting sustainable farming.
The production team involved many background actors and local crew members. Talking about the experience of filming, Wigfield said, “We had such incredible folks working for us. Our production designer, Sharon Seymour, did such beautiful work. It was a lot of work to make grass that wasn’t green, green, and to make trees that were green look like they had snow on them. It was VFX too, but it was just a lot of work behind the scenes.” The team collaborated with the Orange County Tourism & Film Office, as well, which helped them keep up with the production schedule.
Orange County, New York
In Orange County, located in the Mid-Hudson Valley region, the village of Warwick and the city of Newburgh became the bases for the shoot. In Warwick, the crew filmed several scenes incorporating the Winter Haven ski resort at Mount Peter, located along the Appalachian Trail, and its nearby areas. “We did some ski pickups to get actual snow in,” Wigfield revealed, “But it was like an hour north of Mount Peter.” The mountain offers skiing, snowboarding, and tubing activities.
In Newburgh, the crew reached out to Umbra Sound Stages, located at 9 Scobie Drive, Newburgh, NY 12550, for filming the indoor scenes. The NYS Qualified Soundstage Facility, with over 100,000 square feet of infrastructure, offers all kinds of large customizable spaces, green screens, and cutting-edge technology. Popular landmarks found in the city include Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site, located at 84 Liberty Street, Newburgh, NY 12551, the David Crawford House, located at 189 Montgomery Street, and the Newburgh Colored Burial Ground, located at Broadway & Robinson Avenue.
Los Angeles, California
Some parts of the indoor filming of ‘The Four Seasons’ reportedly took place in Los Angeles, AKA LA, as well. Known as the entertainment capital of the world, LA is the home of Hollywood, serving as the base for major production studios like Universal Pictures, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, Walt Disney Studios, and Sony Pictures. Needless to say, the place offers top-tier production services, many of which the crew utilized. Popular visiting spots and landmarks in the region include Venice Beach, the Griffith Observatory, located at 2800 E Observatory Road, Olvera Street, near the Plaza de Los Ángeles, located at 125 Paseo de la Plaza, and the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee in the Santa Monica Mountains.
Fajardo, Puerto Rico
The summer season in the show was filmed in Puerto Rico in December 2024. “I had never been there, and being in the sweltering, beautiful heat with everybody, I think that was very special and fun,” co-creator/actress Fey told Gold Derby. The luxurious El Conquistador resort, located at 1000 Avenida El Conquistador, Fajardo, 00738, is where the friends stay during their vacation in Puerto Rico, and to provide authentic visuals, it was naturally used as the backdrop for many scenes. Standing atop a 300-foot cliff overlooking where the Caribbean and the Atlantic Ocean meet, the resort has rented Palominos Island for tourism activities. Fajardo itself is a hub for recreational boating in Puerto Rico and is home to Puerto del Rey, one of the largest marinas in the Caribbean.
Luquillo, Puerto Rico
The scenes featuring the Eco Resort were shot at the Luquillo Beach in Luquillo, a town located on the northeast coast. It is known for its beaches, including La Bandera, Las Pailas, Mameyes, and Fortuna, as well as the beachside kiosks that offer a variety of Puerto Rican street food. You can spot the El Yunque National Forest nearby, which is known for its hiking trails, including Pico El Yunque, the Los Picachos, the Caimitillo, the Angelito, and La Coca. It also offers birdwatching, picnicking, and camping for visitors.
