In Prime Video’s ‘The Gray House,’ we get acquainted with a group of four women working as railroad operatives on the Underground Railroad during the height of the American Civil War. A pair consists of a Virginia socialite and her mother, while the other two are a formerly enslaved sister-in-arms and the city’s most notorious courtesan. They band together to form an Underground Spy Network and turn the tide of the war in favor of the Union.
As they work in the shadows inside the corridors of Confederate power, the spies not only risk their lives but also their freedom. Featuring compelling performances from Mary-Louise Parker, Daisy Head, Amethyst Davis, Ben Vereen, Paul Anderson, Ian Duff, Hannah James, and Robert Knepper, the historical adventure drama series is based on true events and is set during the Civil War. The tale of espionage unfolds primarily in the darkness of the underground network, a symbol of the women’s contributions and efforts that went unacknowledged.
The Gray House Filming Locations
‘The Gray House’ was primarily filmed in Romania, particularly in and around Bucharest. According to reports, principal photography for the Mary-Louise Parker starrer commenced in June 2023 and went on for a couple of months before wrapping up in August of the same year. The Associate Producer, Kabara Vereen, shared a few insights about being on the set of the series. She stated, “Having our set dog—aka Mr. “Dante” Windley—was a total game changer while shooting @thegrayhouseseries in Bucharest…Between takes, we’d wander parts of the lot not in use that day.”
Bucharest, Romania
To paint the visual aesthetic of ‘The Gray House,’ the production team settled on the city of Bucharest in the southern part of Romania. Often dubbed Little Paris, its historic architecture and versatile landscape proved ideal for creating the Civil War era, where the events of the show unfold. Filming locations were carefully chosen in and around the capital city to establish period accuracy and complement the tone of the narrative. They resorted to a combination of on-location and studio shooting to add a layer of realism and perfectly capture the atmosphere without compromising the grandeur of the setting.
While several historic neighborhoods and rural locales in and around Bucharest were likely transformed for the purpose of filming, the crew reportedly employed the services of Castel Film Studios to tape a few sequences. A prominent filming destination in Central and Eastern Europe, the facility is located at Complex Olimpic Street 48 in the village of Izvorani, located just north of Bucharest. The production complex seemingly lent its resources to build interior sets that contributed to authenticity and reflected the 19th century. Over the years, it has also hosted the filming of titles of varying scale, such as ‘Cold Mountain,’ ‘Them,’ ‘The Sisters Brothers,’ ‘Hatfields & McCoys,’ ‘Adam Resurrected,’ and ‘Walking with the Enemy.’
A portion of the filming of the Prime Video original likely took place in the district of Primăverii as well as Lipsani Street, which also serves as the cultural center in the heart of Bucharest’s Old Town. From what we can tell, it appears that the elegant neighborhood of Dorobanți also makes an appearance in the historical miniseries. Throughout the course of the production, the cast and crew likely had a lot of fun and went home with not just lasting bonds but also meaningful memories.
